It’s legal When did the Oregon DMV stop using raised letters on license plates? A policeman in California questioned the legitimacy of my plates because the letters are not raised. — Terry W., Central Point Well, Terry, that must mean you have Crater Lake plates. According to David House of the Department of Motor Vehicles, that plate is made on "flat plate technology" which allows for more detailed embossing. Advertisement The state’s salmon, tree and Cultural Trust plates still have raised lettering and use traditional embossing. The Oregon Trail plates, no longer in production, also have raised lettering. All the types of plates are legal. All Oregon plates are made by private contractors. Oregon is one of the few states which never had plates made in correctional facilities, House says. Costs and technology will determine the future of the raised lettering.
