LOCAL ROUNDUP Mustangs earn league sweep in Eugene Comment MailTribune.com Writer Posted Jul. 16, 2015 at 2:00 AM Posted Jul. 16, 2015 at 2:00 AM » Social News EUGENE — The Medford Mustangs swept past the Eugene Challengers during American Legion AAA action to take over first place in the Area 4 standings at Swede Johnson Stadium on Wednesday. The Mustangs won the opener, 13-3 in five innings, and took Game 2, 7-2. Micah Brown was 4-for-4 with three runs scored and Cole Carder went 2-for-3 with four RBIs and a run for Medford (29-10, 10-2 Area 4) in Game 1. Austin Zavala finished 2-for-4 with three RBIs and two runs, Steen Fredrickson 2-for-3 with two RBIs and a run and Tate Cowden 2-for-4 with an RBI and a run. Zavala and Carder both had two-run hits in the first inning and Carder added a two-run double in the fourth. In the second game, Colton Westfall was 2-for-4 with an RBI. Jordan Ragan struck out eight and walked four in four innings to improve to 5-1. Eugene is 8-4 in league play. J.J. Kitaoka finished 2-for-3 and John Kinne 2-for-4 for the Rogues (13-20), who let a close game slip away after Victoria (17-16) scored four runs in the seventh inning. Derron Davis stole a pair of bases, including home plate in the first inning. Swimming 12-UNDER LC CHAMPIONSHIPS : At Albany, 10-year-old Medford swimmer Marcus Gentry captured eight first-place finishes for the Superior Stingrays in the Oregon Swimming Long Course 12 and Under Championships. Gentry claimed gold in the 100-meter butterfly (1:14.69), 50 backstroke (35.44), 100 freestyle (1:09.24), 50 butterfly (33.80), 50 freestyle (32.16) and 100 backstroke (1:16.78) and swam legs on the victorious 200 free relay (2:17.95) and 200 medley relay (2:39.03) squads. It is the third straight year Gentry has won eight races at the Championships. Asa Frisbee, Antonio Orozco and Steven Peng were the other members of the winning relays. Frisbee secured second in the 100 backstroke (1:25.51) and was third in the 50 backstroke (39.62) and 100 freestyle (1:13.81). Zoey Dodson picked up three third-place efforts in girls 12-year-old swimming, logging a 1:11.80 in the 100 butterfly, 1:05.89 in the 100 freestyle and 30.13 in the 50 freestyle.
