Pirates junior forward Larrisa Wiltrout notched goals in the 45th and 47th minutes, while the Challengers got a goal in the 46th from freshman forward Katie O’Brien. That was all the scoring at Hawthorne Park, as first-place Phoenix (6-4 overall, 4-0 District 6) picked up a key league victory, 2-1. "It was a good game," said Cascade head coach Craig Warren, whose squad fell to 5-3 overall and 2-2 in the district. "We just had a difficult time with their central midfield (featuring Kelly Riley and Sarah Kieffer), which has a little more speed than us." Wiltrout’s first tally, five minutes into the second half, was off a direct kick. After O’Brien’s fine effort down the right side tied it, Wiltrout finished Riley’s cross to regain the lead for the Pirates. Phoenix earned a 15-12 edge in shots and a 6-1 advantage in corner kicks. Pirates goalkeeper Jaclyn Unruh was solid, as were Challenger keepers Airica Cornwell, who played the first half, and Janessa Collette, using her hands in the second. NORTH VALLEY 2, ROGUE RIVER 1 — At Rogue River, Shea Miller scored the eventual game-winning goal for North Valley. Amber Abbott notched a first-half score to put the Knights up 1-0 at the break. Miller added her goal for a 2-0 lead and Rogue River’s Jenny Harryman scored in the 51st minute to produce the final margin. North Valley improved to 3-1 in District 6 play, while the Chieftains fell to 0-3. HENLEY 5, MAZAMA 0 — At Klamath Falls, Heather Olliffe and Becky Schwartz each scored two goals to lead Henley to a District 6 win. Olliffe scored the opening goal in seventh minute then put the Hornets up 2-0 13 minutes later. Schwartz staked Henley to a 3-0 lead at the half with her first score then cushioned the lead in the 70th minute. Henley outshot Mazama 19-13 and improved to 6-2-1 overall and 3-1 in Skyline play. Boys ST. MARY’S 5, UMPQUA VALLEY CHRISTIAN 0 — Junior forward Sean Snider and freshman central midfielder Austin Grant each scored a pair of goals to propel St. Mary’s to a District 3 romp at home. Snider started the scoring in the eighth minute, unassisted, then dished to junior forward Michael Staver for a 2-0 lead in the 28th. Grant finished a penalty kick in the 43rd and had a deflected shot find the net in the 53rd. Staver assisted Snider in the 59th. The Crusaders (9-1 overall, 5-0 Dist. 3) were missing two defensive starters, but sophomores Josh Jones and Matt Bladek helped shut down the Monarchs. NORTH VALLEY 2, ILLINOIS VALLEY 1 — At Cave Junction, J.B. Handley scored a pair of goals to lead North Valley to a Skyline Conference win. Handley gave the Knights (6-5, 5-3 Skyline) a 1-0 lead with a goal in the 15th minute. Illinois Valley’s Andy Eichmann tied the match in the 30th and Handley produced the final margin with a score in the 70th. Illinois Valley fell to 2-6 in conference play. MAZAMA 2, HENLEY 1, SHOOTOUT — At Klamath Falls, Bjorn Moritiz scored in the second shootout to give Mazama a Skyline Conference win. Brian Smith gave Henley a 1-0 lead with a first-half goal, but Brandon Amaya sent the game into overtime with just two second remaining.
