Duane Eugene Bond, 31, was charged with murder and lodged at the Josephine County Jail. He was arraigned Monday in Josephine County Circuit Court, and his next court appearance is March 21. The probable cause affidavit in the case, filed in court Monday, indicates Bond and his girlfriend confronted Eigenbrod at his residence, and after the girlfriend left, Eigenbrod was left alone with Bond at the residence. Bond was seen leaving Eigenbrod’s residence several minutes later carrying a bloody knife, the affidavit said. Eigenbrod was found a short time later dead, with multiple stab wounds. A family friend of Eigenbrod’s who wished to be anonymous said Monday that her father and Eigenbrod were best friends, and that her father found the body. Bond, who has a long criminal record that includes prison time for drugs and robbery in Curry County, was arrested Saturday night at the same listed address. A family friend of the victim said Bond’s girlfriend’s mother lives in the house next to Eigenbrod’s. Both are down a long lane from Southside Road, behind Copeland’s gravel plant. “Jerry was a helpless elderly man who lived by himself,” the family friend said. “There was no reason for what happened. It was an absolutely ridiculous crime.” Bond’s address is listed as 1947 Allman Drive in Merlin, but court reports list him as having no permanent address. Bond also had previous charges of attempting to elude police in a car, reckless driving, criminal mischief and hit-and-run from a February incident, court records showed. Three days before the killing, Bond showed up at Asante Three Rivers Medical Center saying he had been stabbed. He was treated for lacerations in his chest, according to dispatch records from the Grants Pass Department of Public Safety. Once identified, Bond was arrested for failure to appear on a third-degree theft charge from Deschutes County. He would not cooperate when questioned about how, when or where he was assaulted. He was released from jail later Tuesday, because of the minor nature of the theft charge and overcrowding, a jail deputy said. On Saturday, Sgt. Kyle Hove told the Daily Courier the case began as a medical aid call at 6:42 p.m. Friday and that at some point the aid call “turned into a homicide” investigation. The homicide is the first of the year in Josephine County and the first since October, when a Northern California man was found shot to death in his SUV at Lake Selmac. Two men from Texas are in custody in that case, which authorities believe involved a drug deal. A third suspect in that case remains at-large.
