Sharp, Doty boost Grizzlies to win ASHLAND -- Most tennis insiders assumed that Wednesday's Southern Oregon Conference boys match between North Medford and Ashland would go down to the wire. And it did. The Black Tornado was bent on avenging an earlier loss to Ashland, but the host Grizzlies rode crucial singles victories from Eric Sharp and Jacob Doty to register a 5-4 win. "Most of the matches had some long rallies," said Ashland coach Dick Streng, whose team improved to 7-1 in the SOC and 13-1 overall. "There was a lot of intensity out there." North Medford dropped to 7-2 in league. Streng made a strategical move when he put his No. 1 singles player, Aaron Harris, at No. 2 singles in order to avoid North Medford standout Jon Endrikat. Tornado coach Ray Odor countered by moving his No. 2 singles player, Brock Jonasson, to No. 4 doubles. The chess-like maneuvers canceled each other out as both Harris and Jonasson won their respective matches. The burden then fell on the other singles players, and that's where Sharp and Doty came through for the Grizz. Sharp rallied for a 2-6, 6-3, 6-2 victory over the Tornado's Clint Russell, while Doty overhauled Andrew Theen 2-6, 6-2, 6-4. "Sharp just persevered in his match," Stregn said. "Clint (Russell) played great in the first set and looked like he was going to roll through it, but Sharp fought back and won a battle of attrition." Odor also moved his No. 2 doubles team of Dru Philips and Richard Louie into the No. 1 slot and they responded with a 6-1, 5-7, 6-4 victory over Michael James and Lance Streng. Girls Tennis NORTH MEDFORD 8, ASHLAND 1 -- At District Courts, the Black Tornado swept all five singles matches and the doubles team of Kelsey Chamberlain and Andrea Pratt outlasted their Ashland foes in avenging their lone loss of the season. Chamberlain and Pratt had lost to Ashland's Jenny Spears and Chelsea Johnson in a tight three-setter earlier this season, but the North duo turned the tables at District Courts. Amy Allen added two hits for North, while Lindsay Hale had a double to pace South (3-17). CRATER 6, ASHLAND 5, 10 innings -- At Central Point, Addie Wiersma smacked a leadoff double in the 10th inning and scored on a sacrifice fly to give Crater a non-conference victory. The Comets had taken a 3-0 lead before Ashland scored once in the third inning and twice in the sixth to tie the game at 3-all. The Grizzlies scored twice in the top of the ninth but Crater answered with two runs in the bottom half of the inning as Kara Ray had a key single to score Rachel Hernandez. Ray finished with four hits for Crater (11-8), while Kristen Strait, Jacquie Page and Stephanie Hargis each had two hits for Ashland. Erik Gonzalez limited St. Mary's to one hit in the five-inning affair. Kevin Foreman had three hits to pace North (14-5), while Joe Morris, Zupan and Brewington each had two.
