Not so the second. The Eagles (3-5, 1-2 SOC), behind the five-hit pitching of Ron Depuy, defeated South, the preseason league co-favorite, 2-1. "It’s always fun to beat the No. 1 team," said Eagle Point coach Tom Britton. But in the second, the Panthers rolled to a 16-2, five-inning triumph. They are 6-2, 2-1 in the SOC. Advertisement "South had a little fire in their eyes after the first game," said Britton. "We didn’t roll over, but I think they had something to prove in the second game. That’s what it looked like to me. They came to the plate, and you could see they were ready to get after it." Depuy, a senior left-hander, allowed South’s lone run, which was unearned, in the fourth inning, then retired the final 10 batters. He struck out one and walked one. "He just gave them a steady diet of breaking balls and off-speed pitches," said Britton. "He had them popping up most of the day. A couple of kids made good contact, but they got under them and they stayed in the park." Joe Miller doubled in Ryan Augino, who had singled, to put Eagle Point up 1-0 in the first. The Eagles made it 2-0 in the second when Nick Staller walked, advanced to third on two fielder’s choices and scored on A.J. Nichols’ single. South scored when Logan Boyd doubled and scored on a throwing error. Panther pitcher Tim Holtz allowed only four hits in going the distance. He struck out two and walked one. In Game 2, the Panthers erupted for seven runs in the second inning and cruised on the strength of 15 hits. Corey O’Neill was 3-for-4, scored three runs and drove in two, and Boyd went 2-for-2 with three RBIs and two runs. Also for the Panthers, Andy Narus, who drove in two runs, Tim Holtz and Matt Bryant had two hits. O’Neill ripped a two-run double and Narus a two-run single in South’s big second inning. Tyler Heil got the win, pitching four innings of two-hit ball. He struck out four and walked three. Hegdahl (3-0) allowed four hits and struck out 11. He also doubled twice, scored one run and drove in two. Ashland broke a 1-1 tie in the fifth inning. Micah Weston led off with a walk, Jeff Skinner reached on an error and Ben Dodd sacrificed the runners to second and third. After Arron Nelson walked to load the bases, Jackson Rowe squeezed home Weston. Hegdahl then hit a two-run double. In Game 2, KU capitalized on five Ashland errors for four unearned runs to hand the Grizzlies their first loss of the season. Ashland (6-1, 2-1 SOC) scored four runs — highlighted by sophomore John Goldberg’s two-run homer — in the bottom of the seventh. CRATER 7-6, GRANTS PASS 6-18 — At Central Point, Crater erased two deficits in extra innings to win the opener in 11 innings for its first SOC victory. Evan Seegmiller pitched two scoreless innings for the Comets to pick up the victory. Crater (2-5, 1-2 SOC) scored the winning run when No. 9 hitter Jesse Bailey walked to open the 11th. Jeff Weiss sacrificed Bailey to second, then Dan Whitehead delivered an RBI single. Whitehead sparked the Comets’ attack with four hits, three RBIs and two runs. For Grants Pass (3-4, 1-2 SOC), Nolan Morgan had three hits, including a two-run homer in the ninth, and Matt Cowell collected three hits. In Game 2, Patrick Allen had three hits and four RBIs to pace a Grants Pass 20-hit attack. The Cavemen also received three hits each from Ryan Tuttle, Adam Donnelly and Steve Draper. Morgan hit his second home run of the doubleheader with a three- run blast in the seventh. Whitehead led the Comets with three hits in the nightcap.
