Man shot by Grants Pass police was Gold Hill resident Shawn Pappe Friday Oct 14, 2016 at 3:15 PM Oct 14, 2016 at 3:48 PM Nick Morgan Mail Tribune @mtcrimebeat The man who was shot and killed by Grants Pass police Thursday morning was Shawn Pappe, 46, of Gold Hill, according to Oregon State Police. At about 7:30 a.m. Thursday, Pappe crashed into several parked cars in the parking lot of the Grants Pass Walmart store while driving a silver Chevrolet Suburban SUV, according to OSP, which is handling the shooting investigation. Pappe then drove in the wrong lane down Redwood Highway until he crashed into a guardrail near F Street. Pappe refused to leave his vehicle when ordered by Grants Pass police, and he could be seen holding a large knife, police said. After police attempted to negotiate with Pappe for about 20 minutes, Pappe allegedly exited the truck and headed toward officers while carrying the knife. Police said they fired a Taser and bean-bag rounds at Pappe, but the man continued to advance. Police fired multiple gunshots at Pappe, then called medics who were already staged nearby. Pappe was pronounced dead at the scene. No officers were injured during the incident, and the names of the officers involved are being withheld pending investigation, said OSP Sgt. Kyle Hove. A medical examiner and forensics investigators will determine the number of shots fired and by whom, Hove said. The report will be submitted to the Josephine County District Attorney's Office. "We look at every aspect of it," Hove said. Court records show Pappe in 2015 rammed his vehicle into the back of his foreclosed Gold Hill home because he was upset squatters were living in it.
