Cascade Christian boys hold off St. Mary's St. Mary's had a couple of chances to sneak off with a win in the final 10 seconds against Cascade Christian Tuesday night. But a turnover and missed free throws allowed the Challengers to hold off St. Mary's, 50-49, in Southern Cascade League boys basketball at Grace Christian School. St. Mary's Brian Becker was fouled by Andy Baker as he put up a 3-pointer just before the final buzzer. With the score 50-48, Becker made the second of three free throws to account for the final score. Tim Milojevich's rebound, his eighth of the game, preserved the win. Cascade Christian (15-9, 3-4 SCL) grabbed the lead in the second quarter and had a 47-40 advantage with two minutes to play. Then St. Mary's Chris Murphy bagged two 3-pointers in a row, one from of the top of the key and one from the left wing, to pull the Crusaders within 47-46 with 1:20 to play. St. Mary's fouled Milojevich, who made two free throws to give Cascade a 49-46 advantage with just over a minute to play. But Manny Malfavon drove inside to pull the Crusaders to within 49-48. St. Mary's then fouled Andy Kimmelshue, who missed the front end of a one-and-one with 43 seconds to go. The Crusaders then set up a play to work the ball inside, but Milojevich stole a pass with 10 seconds left and passed to Kimmelshue, who sank one of two free throws to make it 50-48. Then St. Mary's called time up and worked the ball to Becker. Baker paced Cascade with 14 points, while Milojevich had 12. Murphy led St. Mary's with 15 points, while Brenden McNulty added 14. ST. BUTTE FALLS 41, PROSPECT 38 -- At Prospect, Jeremy McKibbin scored all nine of his points in the second half, including the go-ahead bucket with three minutes to play, as the Loggers rallied from a 24-11 halftime deficit. Prospect (8-12, 3-8 Skyline A) held Butte Falls (11-10, 7-2) scoreless for the first four minutes while building a 13-3 first-period lead. The Cougars were led by 6-foot-1 junior Keith Howard, who scored 22 points and had a chance to send the game into overtime with a 3-point shot in the final seconds. MARY'S 22 -- At Grace Christian School, Kelly Clarke scored all 10 of her points and Christine McCandless tossed in seven of her nine as Cascade Christian roared off to a 21-0 lead in the first quarter of their Southern Cascade League game. It was the second time this season the Challengers (19-2, 5-2 SCL) have blanked an opponent for a quarter. Shawna Jackson scored 10 points to lead St. Mary's (3-14, 0-6 SCL). ST. Prospect attempts about 10 3-pointers on a typical night and connects on three or four. But the Cougars caught fire in the second quarter to break open a close game by burying five treys, including two by sophomore Lindsey Acrey and two by Kary Lenderman. The Cougars led 37-20 at the half. Acrey wound up with three treys and a career-high 11 points. Jessica Kramer added two 3s en route to a game-high 19 points. Lenderman finished with 15 points and Ginny Lewis 10. Prospect travels to first-place North Lake Saturday hoping to avenge a 42-36 loss. Lindsey Stockton topped Butte Falls with 12 points. Crystal Stephens grabbed eight rebounds for the Indians, who maintained an eight- to nine-point lead most of the game. Kaci Williams paced Grants Pass (3-15, 1-11 SOC) with 11 points.
