McCormick, who has coached the Grizzlies’ JV squad since 2001, was promoted to the top spot Tuesday, Ashland Athletic Director Karl Kemper announced. McCormick replaces Rich Beugli, who resigned six months ago after four seasons at the Grizzly helm. McCormick, 28, faces quite a challenge. The Grizzlies made the playoffs in Beugli’s first year, but have gone downhill ever since. Ashland is 8-34 in league play since 2002, including consecutive 1-13 seasons over the past two years. McCormick appears unfazed. "I’m very excited," she said. "I’ve been involved with the program for the last six years and I’m really excited to take on the next level." Advertisement McCormick, a substitute teacher who lives in Medford, played softball at College of the Siskiyous and Eastern Oregon University. She also has coached volleyball and basketball at Ashland High School. Despite the team’s struggles in recent years, McCormick is confident that the talent to win is available. The key, she said, is tapping into it. "The biggest problem is getting girls out," McCormick said. "A lot of girls have chosen to play club volleyball instead of softball. And the girls that do go out, the biggest thing with them is getting them to believe in themselves and have some pride in their game." Kemper said McCormick was one of about a dozen applicants. Hamilton Barnes, Beugli’s assistant, did not apply and will continue to help coach the team, Kemper said. "I think she’s a great addition to our staff," Kemper said of McCormick. "She’s a known commodity for us. She’s been coaching here for quite a while and she’s definitely earned the right to run her own program."
