Darby, Dunlap serve up Skyline triumph PHOENIX - The Phoenix volleyball team has been a model of consistency from the service line. Tuesday against Illinois Valley was no different. The Pirates (8-5, 3-2 Skyline) used strong service efforts from April Darby and Jennifer Dunlap to cruise to a 15-0, 15-3 Skyline Conference win over the Cougars. Darby went 11-for-11 serving with an ace, while Dunlap was also perfect in her 10 attempts with two aces. "April has a very well-rounded game," said Phoenix coach Tom Murphy. "We can plug her in anywhere and feel comfortable about it." Junior middle hitters Tiffany Ross and Kelly Meredith combined for 11 kills and six blocks. One of the Pirates' two Skyline losses was a three-set match against league-leading Henley, which breezed past Lakeview (4-1 Skyline) on Tuesday. "If we play well, we can play with both of them," said Murphy. "We just can't afford the unforced errors. But I believe we have the firepower to beat either one of them." Phoenix matches up with Rogue River on Thursday before a crucial contest against Lakeview next Tuesday. HENLEY 15-15, LAKEVIEW 6-10 - At Lakeview, Henley moved to 6-0 in the Skyline Conference with a win over perennial league power Lakeview. The Honkers committed 11 service errors and struggled with moving the ball in the defeat. Jess Childress led Lakeview (15-3, 4-1 Skyline) with six kills. Stacey Maupin led Henley with 14 kills, while Sam Young and Jennifer Klaja each added nine. Teammate Catherine Stock led the way with 35 assists. Frederick also served 10 points for the Chieftains (4-2, 3-2 Skyline) in the Game 1 romp, and Alex Dean knocked home six straight points in the second game. Elizabeth Seybold and Nicole Roberts added three aces each for the Knights, now 3-2 in the Skyline Conference and 5-4 overall. Hidden Valley fell to 0-5 in league play and 1-6 overall. Southern Cascade League The Challengers, who returned nearly all of their starters from the team that placed eighth in the state last year, improved to 9-0 overall, 2-0 SCL. Whitney Brookins notched 21 assists and five aces to lead the way. Kristin Salamone had four kills and two aces and combined with Amy Roseberg for three blocks. Sheena McNeill chipped in four digs in the win. Setter Melissa Anderson was 12-for-12 serving and contributed 16 assists for the Crusaders (7-5, 2-0 SCL). Libby Trum had 14 digs and four kills in solid back-row play. Kathryn Zielony added 15 digs, and Chrissy Seus had eight kills and eight digs.
