"After a thorough analysis of our jail operations, it is clear that our jail is not adequately staffed to maintain current operations," a press release from the department said. "Therefore, Sheriff Falls has made the decision to reduce our inmate population back to its original numbers prior to the 2014 opening of the basement in the jail." The release said the closure is temporary until staffing levels can increase. In 2014, Sheriff Mike Winters led a $2.7 million remodeling project in the basement in order to house 62 more inmates. The remodeling added 9,881 square feet to the jail's total size and brought its capacity to 292 inmates. Falls plans to release more details at a press conference at 3 p.m. today.
