September 01. 2015 2:00AM Challengers fall in battle of powers Visiting Creswell rallied for a five-set victory over Cascade Christian Monday in a season-opening volleyball matchup of top-three Class 3A teams from last season. Creswell triumphed, 25-21, 13-25, 23-25, 26-24, 15-11. The Bulldogs were state runners-up in 2014, and Cascade Christian was third. The Challengers had a three-point lead in what could have been the decisive fourth set but dropped three straight points, allowing the Bulldogs back in it. “We showed our age tonight,” said Cascade Christian coach Rob Kleker, who starts two freshmen and a sophomore. “You get those younger kids that aren’t used to playing in these kinds of matches, and they get you. But it was a good match. It was kind of a fun way to open up the season.” Cascade Christian led 22-19 in the fourth set before a pair of mistakes — a missed serve and a ball the Challengers couldn’t get a block on — helped Creswell tie it 22-all. For the Challengers, junior outside hitter Claire Hawkins posted 18 kills and senior middle hitter Ellie Brown added 11.
