Cascade overcome sluggish start, rolls over Regis PENDLETON - When Cascade Christian awoke from its slumber, it found itself in the middle of a first-round game at the Class 2A girls basketball state championship tournament at Pendleton High School. With the win over the Tri-River League runner-up, Cascade, 22-3, advances to a 4:30 p.m. game today against No. 4-ranked Dayton. Dayton routed top-ranked Pilot Rock, 49-33. Cascade, unranked and with nary a vote in the coaches' poll, slogged through the first two quarters and trailed 23-18 at intermission. In addition to first-game jitters, the Challengers welcomed back point guard Hannah Gettman to the lineup for the first time since she and her family were involved in an automobile accident Feb. 23 that claimed the life of her grandmother and left her with 30 stitches in her right arm. After Whitney Brookins' team-high 11 points, Gettman was one of four Cascade players to tally nine points. "We were too tight," said Challengers coach Loren King, whose team had to take the floor for an 8 a.m. tip-off. "Everyone was wanting to do real well and just pushing a little too hard. Our shots wouldn't go, we forced our passes and we just got out of sync a little bit." But when he looked at the scoreboard, "as ugly as we were playing, we were still in the game," said King. In the second half, the Challengers jelled, forcing Regis into their type of game. That meant Cascade became the aggressor on offense drawing fouls and going making good at the free-throw line. The Challengers made 15 of 21 second-half foul shots and 23 of 35 for the game. Conversely, Regis was only 4 of 17 at the line. With a four-point lead and three minutes left, Cascade pulled the ball out and forced the Rams to foul, then converted at the line to expand the lead. "We tried to get a couple of their better kids in foul trouble," said King, "and it worked. As soon as something works, everyone gets encouraged. "We like to go to the line." King was impressed with Gettman, who had attended team practices but hadn't taken the floor in the aftermath of the accident. "She had a special wrap on her arm and was a little rusty, King said, but more importantly, "she plays with a full heart out there." Laural Kelley, Amy Roseberg and Kristin Salamone also scored nine for the Challengers. REGIS (39) - Voltin 21, Kr. Jensen 4, Ka. Class 2A Boys ST. MARY'S 58, CROW 42 - At Pendleton, seventh-ranked St. Mary's overcame a relatively sloppy game to post the first-round, state-tournament victory at Pendleton High School. St. Mary's faces second-ranked Gold Beach at 7:30 tonight. Gold Beach defeated Warrenton, 56-36, on Tuesday. For St. Mary's, Michael Fiddler was a force inside with 20 points, 15 rebounds and seven blocked shots. He helped St. Mary's pull away from a 24-20 halftime lead and make a rout of it. St. Mary's committed 22 turnovers, an unusually high number for the 20-6 squad, but was buoyed by solid defense. It held Crow to four points in the first quarter. PORTLAND ADVENTIST 79, CASCADE CHRISTIAN 44 - At Pendleton, Northwest League champion Portland Adventist (20-5) blitzed Cascade Christian with a full-court press to advance into today's quarterfinals against Oakland. The Challengers (16-10), the SCL's No. 2 seed, fall into the consolation bracket and will face McKenzie, a 37-20 loser to Oakland, at 8 a.m. today at Pendleton High School. The Cougars forced Cascade Christian into 19 of its 22 turnovers in the first half and built a 47-17 lead at the break. "It was an incredible trapping zone defense," Cascade Christian coach Brian Morse said. "We haven't seen anything like that this season." Cascade Christian shot 27.7 percent (18-65) from the field, while the Cougars took advantage of lots of transition opportunities to shoot at just under 48 percent. Jon Gettman scored a team-high nine points for the Challengers, and Zach Mellow pulled down a team-best eight rebounds. Cascade outrebounded Portland Adventist, 50-36. "Our kids showed some heart," said Morse. "They kept diving on the floor and going hard for rebounds even though we were way behind. They were just a much better team."
