Mail Tribune 100: May 30, 1916 The following news items were drawn from the archives of the Mail Tribune 100 years ago Comment MailTribune.com Writer Posted May. 30, 2016 at 12:01 AM Posted May. 30, 2016 at 12:01 AM » Social News May 30, 1916 MEDFORD PAYS LOVING TRIBUTE TO THE DEPARTED Medford paid its annual tribute to the dead heroes of the civil war today with a parade, exercises at the Page theater, a general suspension of business and decoration of graves with flowers and flags. Under the auspices of the G. A. R. and Women's Relief Corps, the parade was held in the morning, the march being down Main street from the city park to the Page theater. The entire membership of the G. A. R. and W. R. C. were in line, and the ranks have thinned since last Decoration day. The line of march was headed by the Medford band, followed by fraternal organizations, school children and Company 7 C. A. C. At the Page theater the address of the day was delivered by the Rev. Wm. B. Hamilton of the Episcopal church. He dwelt upon the debt of love owed the nation to the old soldiers, who fought for the preservation of the Union. He argued that in a world war the honor paid the veterans by America was a singular message of love. The address was of unusual merit and force and was listened to by a large audience. Patriotic readings, songs and music were given by Mrs. George T. Wilson, Miss Sadie Whitman, Miss Webster, Mrs. Lynette Hovious and Forrest Edmeades. The theater was decorated with the national colors. All day long Medford people journeyed to the cemeteries to lay tokens of memory upon the last resting places of departed ones, and the G. A. R. held their simple and impressive exercises, a flag and flowers being placed upon the grave of each departed veteran. City and county offices, the banks and post office were closed all day. The stores and barber shops closed at noon. LOCAL AND PERSONAL Work is proceeding substantially on the construction of the catsup plant on the Southern Pacific line opposite the ice plant. Mr. Zimmer of the Knight Packing company, Portland, is superintending the work.
