PREP BASEBALL South Medford bats sizzle in sweep Comment MailTribune.com Writer Posted Apr. 24, 2016 at 2:00 AM Posted Apr. 24, 2016 at 2:00 AM » Social News ROSEBURG — The South Medford baseball team racked up 36 hits as it swept Roseburg, 12-5 and 9-6, during Southwest Conference play at Legion Field on Saturday to complete a three-game sweep. The Panthers had lost five straight league contests before beating the Indians, 5-4, last Tuesday. In the Saturday opener, Cole Carder was 3-for-5 with a deep solo home run to center field, two RBIs and three runs scored. Highlighted by Jack Thompson’s two-out, three-run double, South scored four runs in the fourth inning to take a 7-1 lead en route to victory. The first game was delayed by rain after the sixth inning. Jaalen Owens was 3-for-5 with two runs, Christian Mahoney 2-for-4 with two runs, Matt DeVries 2-for-2, Clint Campbell 2-for-3 and Jaylin Parnell 2-for-4 with two runs. The Panthers (6-11, 5-7 SWC) scored four runs — three on a double by Carder to take an 8-6 lead — with two outs in the top of the sixth in Game 2. He was 4-for-5 with two doubles and four RBIs, while Parnell finished 4-for-4 with three runs and two doubles, Thompson 3-for-5, Owens 2-for-3 and Jacob Melton 2-for-4. The Indians (8-8, 7-5) dropped into a tie for second place with North Medford in the SWC. CRATER 11-13, SPRINGFIELD 1-2: At Springfield, Nick Bastendorff went 6-for-8 to pace Crater’s 26-hit output in winning a pair of mercy-rule shortened MWL road games. In the six-inning opener, Comet starter Neil Bastendorff (4-2) pitched three no-hit innings with four strikeouts. Nick Bastendorff provided four hits, three runs and two RBIs, while Comet teammates Hayden Deuel, Shay Hall and Jake Ireland each had two hits. Ireland tossed three innings of one-hit ball in the five-inning nightcap to improve his record to 5-0. Crater (12-5, 8-1 MWL) got three hits and three runs from Caine Smith. Churchill’s lone hit came on Ben Womack’s single to open the fourth inning. Jesse Carroll went 3-for-4 to pace the Grizzlies’ 12-hit attack. Fuller and Caleb Bell added two hits each. In Game 2, Churchill (9-7, 3-6 MWL) erupted for nine runs in the second inning to take command. Fuller had two hits for the Grizzlies (13-4, 8-4) in the nightcap. HENLEY 4-11, PHOENIX 3-4: At Klamath Falls, Phoenix leadoff hitter James Turnbull had a big day at the plate but top-ranked Henley prevailed in the Skyline Conference road doubleheader. Turnbull rapped five hits and scored a pair of runs for the Pirates (7-2, 2-4 Sky) on the day. In the opener, Turnbull walked in the first inning and scored the first of two Pirate runs in the opening frame. Thomas Skaff added two hits for Phoenix. In Game 2, Turnbull collected three hits and Kyle Botermans had a double and single against the Hornets (16-1, 6-0). Ty Mulholland finished 3-for-3 with two RBIs and two runs, Travis Danielson 2-for-3 with three RBIs and three runs, Tanner Smith 2-for-2 with two runs and Ben Robinson 2-for-4 with two RBIs for the Crusaders (18-0, 5-0 SCL). Scofield, who was 3-for-5 with two RBIs in the opener, drove in Wade May, who got on base with a two-out single. Tanner Bacon's RBI single in the sixth inning tied things at 3. Roo Drinskell was 2-for-4 in both wins. In the second game, May went 3-for-3 with two RBIs and three runs, Devin Sheile 2-for-3 with three runs and Jarred Gaines 2-for-4 for the Cougars (7-1, 6-0 Dist. 4).
