Since You Asked: Bolz/South Pac intersection could be signed Wednesday Dec 7, 2016 at 12:01 AM I know it's legal to make a left turn off a two-way onto a one-way (when there's no incoming traffic.) The new intersection at Bolz Road and South Pacific Highway in Phoenix provided an opportunity for that legal left-turn discussion last evening, so I'm turning to you for an answer. Heading south (two-way, two lanes each direction) on South Pac, there are two left-turn lanes that turn east onto Bolz Road, a one-way, two-lane road. Is it legal to make that left turn onto Bolz from either of those two turn lanes at that intersection while the light is red? — Judy B., via email   Yes, one can do so legally, but transportation officials still frown upon it. Under ORS 811.360, you can turn left onto a one-way street on a steady red arrow, even from a two-way street, unless another traffic control device, such as a sign, prohibits it. That's the case here on this particular turn, but you've got two safety concerns. One is that the turn is a hairpin, and second is that there is limited sight distance from Highway 99 to East Bolz Road, according to Oregon Department of Transportation spokesman Gary Leaming. Because of all that, there's a chance some rule changes are coming to this intersection. "Given the geometry of the move, the two left-turn lanes and limited sight distance to traffic coming from the right, we'll be reviewing whether to sign it, prohibiting a left turn on red at the intersection," Leaming said in an email.
