Oregon Road Conditions & Cams Email Story to a Friend September 3, 2005 Rogue Valley works to add donations By JONEL ALECCIA Mail Tribune Dismayed and feeling helpless, several Southern Oregon workers have organized individual and group fund-raisers to provide even modest relief to victims of Hurricane Katrina. "I was getting ready for work and I was watching CNN and they just looked so sad," said Christine Stout, 38, a manager and server at Pasta Piatti, an Ashland restaurant. "I thought, ‘What can I do to help?’ " Stout decided to donate half of her tips for a day to the Hurricane Katrina relief effort — and she urged fellow restaurant servers to do so, too. "We think we can raise $500 (today)," Stout said. Direct donations to local branches of the Salvation Army and the American Red Cross had topped $47,000 by Friday, organizers said. Advertisement But hairstylists, teachers and other workers were determined to increase that amount as reports of chaos, despair and death flooded in from the devastated Gulf Coast. Michael Belkin, 42, challenged all hairstylists in Southern Oregon to join him in donating the price of one cut. "It’s $24 for a haircut and style. It’s all I can afford; I’m a little guy," said Belkin, who works at the Luminous salon in Central Point. State records indicate there are nearly 1,600 hairstylists licensed in Jackson County. If they all donated even $24 apiece, that would be more than $38,000. All of the small donors indicated they planned to deliver the proceeds to the local office of the American Red Cross. Such gifts are more than welcome, said Marj Jameson, director of the local branch. However, people who plan elaborate fund-raisers should contact Red Cross officials before using the agency’s name. Here’s a list of several local efforts: Pasta Piatti — 358 E. Main St., Ashland. Servers will donate half of all tips received during business hours on Saturday. Call 488-5493. Luminous Body Salon — 20 N. Fourth St., Central Point. Stylist Michael Belkin has challenged all Southern Oregon stylists to donate the cost of one haircut to the American Red Cross, the Salvation Army or the United Way’s long-term healing fund. Call 664-1802. Kennedy Elementary School — Teacher Kim Gabriel is organizing a relief effort that will receive matching funds from a local lumber company. Send checks made out to the American Red Cross with "hurricane relief" written in the memo line. Mail them to Kim Gabriel, c/o Kennedy Elementary School, 2860 N. Keeneway Drive, Medford, OR 97504. Fasturn Junction, The Crowning Touch Inc. — Donations of quilts, clothing and cash will be accepted at Fasturn Junction. David Graham, chief executive officer of the company, said he has contacted representatives from Feed the Children, a national hunger relief charity. They’ve relayed specific needs for supplies, including blankets and clothing. Fasturn Junction is at 3859 S. Stage Road, Medford, OR 97501. Call 776-9030. United Way "Night of Caring" — The United Way of Jackson County will donate proceeds of ticket sales for a community concert planned Sept. 17 at Kids Unlimited, 821 N. Riverside Ave., Medford. Proceeds from the long-planned concert, estimated at about $3,000, originally were dedicated to the United Way’s community fund. Instead, they’ll now be routed to the national United Way’s Hurricane Katrina Relief Fund. Tickets are available at 711 E. Main St., Suite 17, Medford, OR 97501. Call 773-5339.
