PREP GOLF Crater's Giles commits to Oregon She became the Comets' first state champion last spring Comment By Dan Jones Mail Tribune MailTribune.com By Dan Jones Mail Tribune Posted Sep. 18, 2015 at 8:57 PM Updated Sep 18, 2015 at 9:37 PM By Dan Jones Mail Tribune Posted Sep. 18, 2015 at 8:57 PM Updated Sep 18, 2015 at 9:37 PM » Social News Crater golfer Daniele Giles verbally committed to the University of Oregon on Wednesday. The home-schooled senior became the first Comet golfer to win a state crown when she tied for the Class 5A honor this past spring. The final decision came down to Oregon and Oregon State University, the 17-year-old Giles said. UO head coach Ria Scott saw Giles for the first time in the U.S. Girls Junior Amateur Qualifier at the OGA Golf Course in Woodburn in June. Scott called Giles the next day and Giles took an unofficial visit to the Eugene campus, she said. Last season, the Ducks recorded their lowest three-day score at an NCAA Regional in school history after a 2-under 286 in the third round, with a tournament total of 865 (1-over). Oregon finished in eighth place and did not qualify for the NCAA Championships, but the 865 was its best performance at a regional by 20 strokes. The Ducks shattered their previous scoring-average school record that was set last year (298.61) with a 292.66. Giles said she is eager to compete in Eugene and excited for the future. Official golf signings begin in November. “It is going to be a great team,” she said. “And that is kind of what I wanted, to play for a good team. I know I could play for another team and be on the traveling team right away for sure, but Oregon would be harder to get on the traveling team. But I was up for the challenge.” The Ducks practice at Eugene Country Club. “The facilities are great, the course is great,” Giles said. “That’s a pretty awesome place to practice.” Oregon State coach Sammie Chergo watched Giles during the American Junior Golf Association tournament at Centennial in August and had seen her before, Giles said. Giles had a busy summer of elite circuit play, traveling to compete in events including the IMG Academy Junior World tournament in San Diego and the U.S. Girls Junior championship in Tulsa, Okla. “It was kind of crazy,” she said. This past spring, Giles tied for first with Summit’s Madison Odiorne at the state championships. Reach reporter Dan Jones at 541-776-4499, or by email at [email protected].
