And the Panthers were victimized again, this time against cross-town rival North Medford in a Southwest Conference match Tuesday. The Black Tornado scored a short-handed goal with two minutes remaining and came away with a 2-2 tie at South Medford High. Eric Benitez, North's senior goalie, converted off a corner kick by freshman Caleb Forte in the 78th minute to knot the score at 2-all. "They brought everybody up on the ball and Eric Benitez got a foot on it," said South Medford coach Josh Desmond. The teams played to a scoreless halftime tie. The Black Tornado (3-3-3, 3-0-2 SWC) opened the scoring in the 44th minute on a goal by senior forward Skye Brownlow. "He beat a couple of defenders and had a wide open look from about 25 yards out," said Desmond. "It caught the corner of the net. It was a worthy goal." The Panthers (5-1-3, 3-0-2) tied the game on a pivotal call in the 68th minute when the Black Tornado was given a red card for a hard foul in the box and Kyle Owings converted on the penalty kick. In the 76th minute, South took a 2-1 lead when Josue Reyes beat Benitez on a 1-on-1 situation. Then North's late gamble paid off. "We were down a goal so I told Benitez to get in the box because we have nothing to lose," said North Medford coach Michael Belzberg. South first-year coach Desmond had praise for defender Jonah Michael and midfielder Diego Rodriguez. "We were moving the ball and had good communication," said Desmond. "North has speed and they have some playmakers." ROSEBURG 4, GRANTS PASS 2 : At Roseburg, Grants Pass dropped to 0-8 overall and 1-5 in the Southwest Conference. ASHLAND 2, EAGLE POINT 1 : At Eagle Point, Bryce Rollins scored two second-half goals to rally Ashland in the nonleaue game at Eagle Stadium The Eagles (5-2) led 1-0 at halftime on Miguel Robledo's goal in the fourth minute off Sebastian Tovar's free kick. Rollins scored the equalizer at the beginning of the second half and connected on the game-winner in the 63rd minute for the Grizzlies (4-2-1). Fernando Gutierrez was key in coordinating the Eagles' defense. Girls GRANTS PASS 2, ROSEBURG 1 : At Grants Pass, Kylee Dillon scored two first-half goals to erase an early Roseburg lead in the SWC match at Mel Ingram Field. Sydney Holborow shocked the Cavers (4-4-1, 3-2 SWC) with a goal in the first minute. Dillon tied the game in the fourth minute, then struck for the eventual game-winner in the 28th minute. Gretchen Berkey, the Grants Pass senior goalkeeper, made eight saves, including one off a Roseburg (3-6, 1-4) breakaway in the 78th minute. ASHLAND 4, EAGLE POINT 0 : At Ashland, Mya Elder-Hammond had a goal and an assist, leading Ashland to its fourth straight win in nonleague action at North Mountain Park. The sophomore scored with her left foot in the sixth minute on an assist by Tess Gibbs. In the 59th, Elder-Hammond stole the ball near the end line and found a wide-open Hailee Hayes in front of the goal for a 2-0 lead. Hannah Haptonstall and Livy West also scored goals for the Grizzlies (5-0-3).
