The 22nd-ranked Raiders, who easily repeated as conference champion and enter this week’s regional tournament with a program-best 38-10 record, feature four first-team league and regional all-star players (Miranda Gillaspie, Haley Varley, Kara Ray and Amy Williams), and two others (Carla Lillis and Megan Rock) were honorable mention loop selections. Gillaspie, a 5-foot-10, junior transfer from Clackamas Community College, earned league pitcher-of-the-year status based on a circuit-leading 21-5 record and a 1.65 earned run average. The former Redmond High star won 11 consecutive games and allowed only six earned runs in 60 innings of action during SOU’s 17-game win streak during March and April. Varley, a junior right fielder from Medford who holds six school records, is now a three-year conference and regional honoree. The three-time loop player-of-the-week selection is second in the six-team loop for batting average (.400) and runs (42), and is fourth for steals (16). Ray, a junior shortstop from Central Point who transferred to SOU from Wichita State University, leads the conference in batting average (.419) and runs (43), and is second for hits (67) and steals (30). All four totals shattered (or are in excess of) school season records. Advertisement Williams, a sophomore first baseman from Ashland, has compiled a .368 batting average and a league-best (and school record) 44 RBIs in her first year as a collegiate softball player. The Ashland High graduate is an amazing 17-for-21 (.810) with a runner on third base with less than two outs and 6-for-6 with the bases loaded. Lillis, a junior catcher from Redmond who is Gillaspie’s longtime battery mate, has posted a .336 season batting average and leads the team with 14 two-out RBIs, while Rock, a sophomore second baseman from Canby, is .368 at the plate and has a .974 fielding percentage. The Raiders begin the challenging quest for regional supremacy today at Delta Park in Portland as the No. 2 draw among four contenders in the two-day, double-elimination tournament that yields the champion an automatic berth to nationals. SOU tangles with league runner-up Oregon Tech, the No. 3 seed, in an 11 a.m. opening round contest, while second-ranked and three-time defending champion Simon Fraser takes on fourth-seeded Eastern Oregon at the same time on an adjacent field.
