North boys ride late surge to triumph With the score tied 38-38 with four minutes to play, North Medford went on a scoring binge that staggered the Eagle Point Eagles. Mike Olson and Tate Mellbye led the way, scoring six points each in the fourth period, as the Black Tornado registered a 50-45 Southern Oregon Conference victory. Wes Towne led North Medford with 15 points, while Olson and Mellbye added 12 each. Mellbye also had 11 rebounds, including six on the offensive end, and took an offensive charge in the late going. North Medford scored 11 points in six possessions down the stretch as it improved to 5-7 overall and 2-1 in the SOC. "We executed our half-court offense very well in the latter part of the fourth quarter," North Medford coach Gene Quilhaugh said. "We were able to generate open shots and we hit them." Once it got the lead, the Tornado spread the floor and went to the free-throw line. Nick Rouhier led Eagle Point with 14 points before fouling out with three minutes to play. SOUTH MEDFORD 72, CRATER 44 --At Central Point, Ethan Wallenberg scored 13 points to lead a balanced South Medford attack and the Panthers exploded for 26 first-period points on the way to the easy SOC victory over Crater. The Panthers shot 50 percent from the field (29 of 58) and a sizzling 75 percent from the 3-point line (6 of 8) as they improved to 3-0 in the SOC. Nick Decker added 12 points and Damian Rasmussen chipped 12 for the Panthers, who led 26-8 after one period and 44-23 at halftime. Josh Jones paced Crater (3-13, 0-3 SOC) with 12 points. KLAMATH UNION 64, ASHLAND 59 -- At Klamath Falls, Adam Bailey scored 17 points, including the go-ahead free throws with 41 seconds to play as the Pelicans kept Ashland winless in SOC play. The score was tied 54-54 with 47 seconds left when Ashland threw the ball away and the Pels quickly cashed in. After Ashland failed to score on its next possession, Tyler Baker converted a three-point play. The Pels put the game away with free throws, going 12-of-16 in the fourth quarter. Brett Zundel paced Ashland with 16 points. Anthony Mason added 16 points and Baker 11 for the Pels.
