Oregon Road Conditions & Cams Email Story to a Friend October 1, 2005 Grants Pass grinds out win over Eagle Point EAGLE POINT — When Eagle Point scored on a 77-yard pass on the first play of the game, it appeared the Eagles’ high-powered offense was back on track. But that wasn’t the case. Grants Pass used the running of junior Craig Dolmage and a stifling defense to come away with a 31-14 Southern Oregon Conference victory at Eagle Stadium Friday. "We had some bad turnovers at the wrong time," Eagle Point coach Harry Hedrick said. "But we couldn’t run the ball, and that was the biggest thing." Eagle Point could not overcome having its offense being limited to a minus 2 yards on the ground. Advertisement The Eagles’ high point came on the first play from scrimmage when Mychal Williams caught a screen pass and went the distance up the sideline. Williams accounted for the Eagles’ other touchdown on a 30-yard, fourth-quarter pass from quarterback Brandt Nevin. But Terry Hodder returned the ensuing kickoff for an 80-yard touchdown to stymie any hopes of an Eagle Point comeback Besides making seven catches for 196 yards and two touchdowns, Williams also intercepted a pass and had a fumble recovery. "Mychal (Williams) had a monster game," said Hedrick. "We needed someone else to step up." Dolmage’s 49-yard first-quarter touchdown run pulled the Cavemen even and the teams went into halftime tied 7-all. The Eagles received the second-half kickoff but turned the ball over on a fumble on the their first play. That led to a Chad Farber 27-yard field goal. "The start of the second half was a telltale sign," said Hedrick. "It put us behind the eight ball." Dolmage finished off a sustained drive with a 7-yard TD run that increased the Cavemen’s lead to 17-7 in the third quarter. "That put us in a throwing mode," said Hedrick. "But we missed some throws and didn’t protect very well at times." Early in the fourth quarter, the Eagles got caught in a stunt and Page Morgan busted a trap play for a 31-yard touchdown to give the Cavemen a 17-point margin. Then the Eagles answered with a quick score to cut their deficit to 24-14 with 8:54 to go. "There was plenty of time to get back in it, but we gave up the touchdown on the kickoff," said Hedrick. Dolmage led all ball carriers with 156 yards on 26 carries. "(Dolmage) is a first-team all-conference player and he showed why," said Hedrick. "We did a pretty good job, but he got loose a couple of times."
