After living in tents and shelters, and with relatives and friends, one local family's Christmas wish is simply being together. So they've moved into a Medford motel. Renting enough space for the family of seven likely will consume the 43-year-old mother's monthly welfare subsidy of $600 and her oldest son's wages from Harry and David. The family came north from California in February to escape abuse and spent the summer camping at Valley of the Rogue State Park. Funding through Community Action fell through a week before the family would have moved into a new home. While the mother stayed in St. Vincent de Paul's Medford homeless shelter with three of the children, the three older ones stayed in Rogue River with friends. Now the family's time at St. Vincent is up. Their greatest need is an affordable rental. However, everyone in the family is short on clothing. The oldest son, 22, wears extra-large shirts and pants in size 40-30. The 19-year-old son, who is trying to bring in some money by roofing, wears large or extra-large shirts and pants in size 42-34. The 18-year-old boy wears medium shirts and pants in size 32-32. The oldest girl wears pants in junior size 14 or women's 7, medium shirts and shoes size 81„2. The 11-year-old girl needs shirts and pants in girls size 10-12, a winter coat in girls size 12-14 and would like a pair of snow boots size 5. The 8-year-old boy wears boys size 6-7 and wants a used Nintendo with a Mario Bros. game. Because of problems with her feet, the mother wears Birkenstocks and could use a pair in size 10.
