The final four were chosen from sets of great music that entertained audiences for four straight Saturdays at Redmen Hall — and raised enough money for LIFE Art, a youth stress-prevention program that provides creative outlets to teens, to move into a downtown studio in Medford. "There are a lot of caring adults in our community who are supportive of our efforts," says Phil Ortega, director of the program. "It really does take a community to raise teens. I could never have provided a gallery space to these kids without Rising Stars' support." This Saturday, rock band The Evening Shades, folk duo Intuitive Compass, alternative folk trio Kites & Crows and guitar and vocal duo The Brothers Reed will vie for a cash prize of $1,000, studio time with a professional engineer at Blackstone Audio in Ashland, a summer gig at Britt's Table Rock City Stage, coverage in Southern Oregon Magazine, and various gigs at Jacksonville wineries and other venues. Tickets cost $12 and audience members can purchase $5 votes to select the winner. Tickets can be purchased at South Stage Cellars, 125 S. Third St., or by calling 541-899-9120. Doors open at 5 p.m. at the Britt Pavilion, 350 First St. All proceeds benefit LIFE Art. Last week's semifinalist, The Brothers Reed, is a new project. Siblings Aaron and Philip Reed have performed as a duo for less than a year, yet have already garnered substantial credits — along with a prolific catalog of original alt-folk and -pop music. "About half of the set last week was really new material," Aaron Reed says. "When Phil and I started Brothers Reed, our music was songs we'd written independently of each other, then arranged to play as duets. After that, we started writing songs together. Our sound is vocal-driven harmonies with strong folk and pop sensibilities. As brothers, we have a genetic harmonic compatibility. "There's something about siblings singing together, like the Shook Twins or The Avett Brothers, the vocals blend in a fused kind of way," he says. "We switch between the low and high ends, and no one can tell because we sound so similar." The Brothers Reed's first album, "Sick as Folk," will be released April 11 with a show at the Imperial Ballroom on Front Street in Medford, and the duo won a Road to Nashville music competition sponsored by 105.1 The Wolf. Medford rock band The Evening Shades is back in the finals this year. The band bowed out in 2014 when lead singer Mark Thales suffered from a collapsed lung and landed in a local hospital. The Shades — Thales, Matt Tayvis, Sammy Kovic and Justen Neilsen — got back in the game on Feb. 28 with a set of upbeat, original pop and rock. "We played songs we felt would be well-received by the judges and the audience," Tayvis says. "We wanted to play the stuff that would get everybody up and dancing. We have a new set planned for the final. The songs will include our serious rock tunes, along with the pop tunes. People always seem to love those." After the finals, one way or the other, The Evening Shades will finish work on its yet-to-be-named debut album. "We're close," Tayvis says. "We just have to make the finishing touches. We'll start playing more shows to promote the album and touring the West Coast." Intuitive Compass — Aurelia Cohen and Jason O’Dea — garnered a spot in the finals with its vaudeville-style original folk. O’Dea plays resonator guitar, banjo and foot percussion, and Cohen brings accordion and bells. The duo has several albums to its credit, with the newest, “Follow Yours,” released in 2014. Ashland trio Kites & Crows brings its mellow, alternative folk to the finals. Principal songwriter Mysha Caruso, multi-instrumentalist Jesse Baldwin and cellist Nancy Martin have a polished, professional sound that is suited for house concerts and wineries. The trio's album "More for the Mender" was released in 2012, and two singles, "We All Come 'Round Tonight" and "Good Light," were released in 2014.
