North Medford blanks Crater North Medford ran its Southern Oregon Conference boys soccer record to 2-0 Saturday with a 2-0 victory over Crater at Varsity Field. The Black Tornado dominated play from the outset. "Crater came out at us pretty strong and pretty hard," said North Medford coach Rich Garcia, "but we pretty much controlled them." Though it had a sizable advantage in shots on goal, only two found the net for the Tornado. The first came 28 minutes into the contest when Dominic Crenshaw crossed a pass to Dan Zimmer, who one-touched it into the goal. "It was bang-bang," said Garcia, "a very pretty goal." That score held up until halftime. "It was still a close game," said Garcia, "so we wanted to do something fast in the second half to put some pressure on them." Only two minutes after the break, Dan Torrey put the ball into the middle and Crenshaw blasted a left-footed shot from 20 yards out. "The goalie got his hands on it, but it just slipped past him," said Garcia. "It was a very powerful shot." North Medford improved to 5-1-2 overall. Garcia credited Josh Grace and Ben Clark for strong defense that kept the Comets away from the middle and the outside play of Eric Brawner and Kedric Charlton. Tornado goalie Jon Cotta earned the shutout, making two outstanding saves in the process, said Garcia. Crater got strong performances from Tristan Webb, John Bowers and Jason Bell. Comets defender Dan Weaver suffered a broken leg in the match and will miss the rest of the season. GRANTS PASS 3, ROSEBURG 2 At Grants Pass, Andrew Purser scored his second goal and the match winner 22 minutes into the second half. Purser, a senior forward, took a pass from Joe Baca on the left flank, slipped past Roseburgs outside fullback, then beat the Indian goalie one-one-one from about 12 yards out. Brant Minor opened the scoring at the 12th minute for Grants Pass (6-3, 1-1 SOC). Jesse Spann assisted. Midway through the half, Purser scored off an assist from Minor. Roseburg answered with a penalty kick by Jered Moss and a goal by Josh Carlson to knot the score at 2 by halftime. Grants Pass junior goalie Matt Lamont was forced to make several difficult saves to thwart Roseburgs attack in the final five minutes to preserve the victory. KLAMATH UNION 8, EAGLE POINT 1 At Eagle Point, eight different players scored a goal for Klamath Union (8-1, 2-0 SOC). The Pelicans leading scorer, junior forward Luis Garcia, contributed the first goal about 10 minutes into the match. Klamath Union led 4-0 at halftime. Eagle Point (0-7-2, 0-2 SOC) scored on Nathan Scudders direct kick from 20 yards midway through the second half.
