Doesn't this defeat the purpose of all this extra overtime? It's like a mom telling the kids exactly when she'll be watching the cookie jar and when she won't. — Melissa, Medford Well, Melissa, it comes down to what mom's goal is for letting the kids know when she's watching the cookie jar: It's not to catch the little imps nicking snacks but to keep them from even trying. "Our goal is deterrence," says Lt. Mike Budreau of the Medford Police Department. "Not only will we be out, but we'll tell everybody we'll be out. If we catch a few people, great. What we're really after is deterrence." Most police agencies have special overtime grants to conduct DUII patrols, and the Super Bowl is one of the best days for that because statistically it's one of the worst for drunken driving and alcohol-related fatal motor-vehicle crashes. Agencies like MPD always tell people when those special patrols occur in hopes they will take the designated driver mantra very seriously, Budreau says.
