Oregon Road Conditions & Cams Email Story to a Friend August 25, 2005 Bizarre father-daughter deaths ruled heart attack, suffocation Staff and wire reports A movie producer and screenwriter found dead in his car in Northern California after abruptly leaving Ashland died from a heart attack, then apparently fell on top of his young daughter who suffocated, according to a coroner’s report. The body of Terry Carr, 62, fell onto his 9-year-old sleeping daughter, leaving her unable to escape or breathe, according to Lake County sheriff’s Chief Deputy Russ Perdock. Both Carr and his daughter, Arieka, were found dead Aug. 1 in the cargo area of their Jeep Grand Cherokee. Carr weighed about 212 pounds and his daughter was about 53 pounds, Perdock said. The vehicle was found parked at a convenience store in Clearlake Oaks, Calif., about 280 miles south of Ashland a day after Carr inexplicably abandoned his wife at PC Market of Choice in Ashland on July 31. The family had rented an Ashland-area apartment on July 29 after telling friends in Los Angeles they were looking for a fresh start. They had considered moving to Powers, a small town on the Oregon coast, but chose Ashland instead. Although Carr had not worked on a film for several years, he remained a well-known producer and screenplay writer. His movie credit list included "The Boost, "The Innocents," "Yes, Giorgio," "Coast to Coast," Welcome to 18," "An Almost Perfect Affair" and "The Bad News Bears Go to Japan." Advertisement The autopsy report completed Tuesday solved the mystery of the deaths, but failed to explain other puzzling questions raised during the investigation. Chikako Carr, 50, said she has no idea why her husband took off while she was in a restroom at Market of Choice. A couple of days before he had dumped a box of belongings, including important personal papers and photos, in a pasture on the outskirts of Ashland. At the time, Chikako Carr thought it was done to symbolize leaving behind their old life in Los Angeles, according to Brent Jensen, an Ashland police detective. Authorities also don’t know why Carr drove to Clearlake Oaks. His brother, John, lives there but said he had not heard from Carr, police said. Still, news of how the pair died came as a relief to an old friend in Southern California. "The idea that a homicide had been committed was first unthinkable ... but to hear some weird and awful natural cause ameliorates that concern," said Dale Franklin, a friend of Terry Carr from Los Angeles whose daughter had attended school with Arieka. Franklin did not know Terry Carr had heart problems. "We talked about it (Franklin’s minor heart problems) and at one point we were saying, ‘It sure puts into perspective the value of the time you have,’ " Franklin said. "He never mentioned anything about any kind of heart trouble." Chikako Carr is still in the Ashland area, but could not be reached for comment. Funeral arrangements for the pair have not been announced.
