Oregon Road Conditions & Cams Email Story to a Friend December 21, 2005 Energetic Panthers top Phoenix Girls Basketball Roundup PHOENIX — Tuesday’s nonconference girls basketball game between South Medford and Phoenix came down to intensity, specifically from the Panther contingent. South Medford played inspired basketball and the Pirates simply couldn’t counter that fiery attitude in a 55-25 runaway victory for the Panthers at Phoenix High. "I think there was some intensity problems with us a little bit," said Phoenix coach Kyle Walker, whose team dropped to 1-9. "In the second and third quarters especially we just didn’t match their intensity and so we had to make a change." South Medford (3-3) held the Pirates scoreless over the final four minutes of the second quarter to take a 26-17 lead into halftime, then outscored Phoenix 18-6 in a third quarter that saw Walker bench his starters for the remainder of the contest. Breanna Banuelos had 12 points, six rebounds and five steals to pace South, while teammate Marissa Towry added 11 points, 10 rebounds and three assists. The Panthers also received 11 points from Elora Grant and nine rebounds, six points and four steals from Alanna Stevens. "I thought the girls played hard," said South coach Melanie Wagoner. "Defensively we picked it up again at halftime and when that gets a little better, the offense just comes." Advertisement Alex Hanscom had six points and Katie Fidler four to pace Phoenix. Josie McDermott had 15 points, six steals and four assists, with freshman Brenna Heater posting 10 points and 10 rebounds for the Grizzlies (8-0). Ashland’s Danielle Thompson added 10 points and Kelsey McKinnis had eight points and six assists. Haas also had seven rebounds and three blocks off the bench, while Kenna Reiter had seven rebounds and five steals, and Emily Brookins added 10 points and seven boards. North Bend’s defensive pressure helped it gain a 35-19 advantage going into the fourth quarter in a game in which it shot only 14-for-33 from the field. The Eagles’ Beth Logan posted team highs with 10 points and seven rebounds, and Terrah Whipple added eight points and four rebounds. Kirsten Emigh contributed five assists for the Eagles (3-4). Sheena Cole added 15 points and Erika Riley tallied 13 points and 12 rebounds for Illinois Valley. Caschera’s baseline jumper with one minute left had given the Chieftains their first lead of the game, and her 3 of 4 effort from the foul line sealed the victory. The Challengers (4-3) led 27-13 at the half and outscored Hosanna Christian 20-2 in the third quarter to blow the game open.
