http://www.omniture.com --> Email Story to a Friend July 3, 2006 Central Point plans July Fourth surprises By buffy pollock for the Mail Tribune CENTRAL POINT — New events at the city's Pfaff Park and Jewett Elementary School will make this year's Fourth of July festivities bigger than in years past, organizers say. "Everyone is just going to be completely surprised. It's going to be so much fun this year," said Debbie Saxbury, Fourth of July Committee chairwoman. In addition to Central Point's annual parade, pancake breakfast and new fun run, there'll be a "Family Fun Zone" at Jewett Elementary featuring 13 interactive and inflatable attractions, ranging from air-filled sumo wrestling games to a jump house and water slide. Kids and adults can purchase a $7 armband or $1 individual tickets for the attractions. A separate area near Jewett will include a slew of old-fashioned, family-friendly games, including three-legged races, inner tube roll races, single and double gunny sack races and a balloon toss. There also will be a water park area with 200 feet of spraying hoses. At Pfaff Park, behind the post office, an arts and crafts fair will take place throughout the day. The event will include food vendors and music performed by the local Pyramid Band, which plays hits from the 1960s through the '90s. Free tractor trolley rides will connect the events at Pfaff Park to Jewett Elementary most of the day. The festivities kick off with a pancake breakfast from 6:30 to 10 a.m. at the Grange Hall on Pine Street. Hosted by local Boy Scout troops, the breakfast costs $4.95. At 7:30 a.m., the city's first Sonic Drive-In Fun Run will take place for kids ages 5-12 at Scenic Middle School. Paradegoers who show up early to stake out their seats will be supplied with chalk and bubbles by the Rogue Creamery to customize their part of the route. Two F-16 fighter jets will fly over downtown at 10 a.m., signaling the beginning of the parade, which travels from Crater High School to downtown. Lifelong residents Erma and Gordon Layton will be grand marshals. A free concert by Christian group Celebrate Freedom will wind things down at the Pfaff Park band shell from 6 to 9 p.m. Buffy Pollock is a freelance writer living in Medford. Butte Falls: Parade, 11 a.m., Butte Falls School; music, food and games, town park. Eagle Point: Pancake breakfast, 7 to 11 a.m., Eagle Point Grange; walk and fun run, 8 a.m., Bob Moore Park, where there'll be vendor booths and entertainment; parade, 11 a.m., Main Street; lawn mower races, following parade, high school; children's booths, 4 p.m., Mattie Brown Park; fireworks at dusk, high school stadium. Medford: Fireworks display, 9:45 p.m., Harry and David Field; gates open at 8 p.m.; shuttles available at the Harry and David employment center.
