The Comets’ dominant wrestling team ratcheted its success to unprecedented heights at the Class 4A state tournament Saturday night, setting a Class 4A record for state placers and team points. Chase Maloney and Collin Brooks bagged individual titles as the Comets soared to their third straight team championship and their sixth in the past eight years. Top-ranked Crater finished the three-day meet with 227.5 points, an all-time best for 4A schools. Advertisement Intermountain Conference champion and No. 2-ranked Pendleton briefly hung with the Comets on opening day, but when the smoke cleared at the Oregon State Fairgrounds Pavilion late Saturday before a crowd of 5,450, the Buckaroos were 56 points behind with a total of 171.5. West Linn was a distant third with 131.5, while Newberg gripped the final team trophy with 105.5 points. Roseburg was fifth with 83.5 and Grants Pass eighth with 78.5. "This is by far the most dominant team we’ve had up here," said Crater coach Greg Haga, who won his sixth overall title since taking over the Comets’ program 16 years ago. "Pendleton’s a great team, good enough to have won it a lot of years, and yet we beat them by more than 50 points." Maloney completed a perfect season by hammering out a 14-4 victory over Sprague’s Mark Cinquini in the 160-pound final. "This is as good as it gets," Maloney said, pointing to his 42-0 record, an individual state title and the team crown. "Hopefully our young guys can crank it up next year and go for a four-peat." Brooks, meanwhile, turned the tables on North Medford’s Chris Platt in the 171-pound final. Platt beat Brooks three times in four matches earlier this season, but Platt wrestled a near-perfect match to register a 4-2 win. The Crater standout countered an early Platt takedown try for a takedown of his own and led throughout. "I had to be aware of his single (single-leg takedown) all the way through," Brooks said. "That’s what I worked on the last two weeks in practice, learning to counter his single and stay in position. "Basically, I just wrestled a smart match." Three other Comets tasted defeat in the finals. Tyler Weathers (119) was pinned by Pendleton’s Tyler Kilkinny; Ron Lee (171) suffered an 11-7 upset loss to Clackamas’ Jake Cranford; and Charlie Alexander (275) was pinned by Clackamas’ Rudy Schaffroth. Lee, the state’s top-ranked 171-pounder and a defending state champion, jumped to a 6-2 lead in the first period, but Cranford, ranked No. 2, fought back to get within 6-5 heading into the third period. Lee was then penalized a point for an inadvertent kick to Cranford’s head and Cranford added an escape with less than a minute left to take a 7-6 lead. As the final seconds ticked down, Lee was handed a point for Cranford stalling, tying the match at 7-all. However, Lee didn’t realize he had received the final point and went for a desperation takedown. Cranford got the takedown instead and added a two-point near fall for the final margin. "Ron got out of position a couple times and it cost him," Haga said. Jake Vizzini (112) and Cody Clark (215) added third-place showings for Crater, while Devon Mauck (130) grabbed fourth, Jon Bernhardt (145) claimed sixth and Zack Kezer (103) and Chris Robertson (189) each took eighth. "We took 14 guys up here and 11 of them placed," Haga said. "That’s a heck of an effort." Tyler Baker of Grants Pass tallied a takedown in the final four seconds to edge Redmond’s Tanner Robertson in the 112-pound final. Former Crater standout Bryson Gutches, who now competes for Churchill High of Eugene, won his third straight title with a 3-1 victory over Sprague’s Keegan Davis at 152 pounds.
