HOOD — A league only four years old made huge strides over the weekend. The Southern League, consisting of teams from South Medford High, North Medford, Crater, Eagle Point, Grants Pass and Ashland, represented itself well at the Oregon Interscholastic Snowboard Association championships on Friday and Saturday. Ashland, North and South Medford each had competitors in the 20-plus team event with schools from around the state. The Grizzlies’ girls boardercross squad, made up of Hallie Beaver, Stephanie Elliott, RieAnn Fullwood, Anna Gordon-Norby, Emma Kurtz and Ella Street, picked up a first-place finish in the boardercross event. Boardercross consists of six teammates running the same course with a combined time. Individually, Fullwood was crowned the state champion, while teammates Wasserman took fourth, Gordon-Norby fifth and Street sixth. Advertisement "We’ve been competing for four years and to have a state champion from Southern Oregon is pretty cool," said Ashland coach Matt Faurot, who founded the Ashland squad four years ago and led the Grizzlies to the league title this season. "These kids all train together at Mt. Ashland so there’s a lot of camaraderie." Ashland’s boys team, which took second overall last year, grabbed first led by Evan Campbell’s time of 35.68 — the fastest time on Friday. Other teammates include Owen King, Alex Krill, Sammy Scheer, Jacob Ripper and Eli Otter. South Medford finished fifth as a team. In slopestyle, the Ashland girls finished second with Street, Elliott, Lily Mc Cabe, Kurtz, Gordon-Norby and Hallie Beaver making up the team. Elliott claimed the state title individually, while Beaver grabbed fourth. The Panthers’ boys team finished ninth overall with David Lane’s sixth-place finish leading the way. North’s Ryan Scott took second and St. Mary’s freshman Seth Hill, the lone Crusader competitor in the Southern League, finishing fourth. The North and South Medford teams train together but compete separately behind coach Joel Glimpse’ tutelage. "This is the most successful season we’ve had," said Glimpse, a South Medford graduate who competed in the league two years ago. "Our league has really come a long ways in a short period of time. "The other schools in the state are starting to take notice of us, especially with how successful Ashland has been. I think we’re a league that the other schools are really going to have to worry about." The state event was originally scheduled for March 7-8, but a snow storm that dumped six feet suspended action until last weekend. Boys Golf ROSEBURG INVITATIONAL — At Roseburg, North Medford’s Mike Barry earned medalist honors and the Black Tornado slipped past Roseburg for the overall title of the six-team event. Barry shot a 2-over-par 74 to win the individual title by one stroke over teammate Mark Wilson. North, which has struggled this season to find consistency, earned 307 team points to edge out the Indians’ 310. "We’ve kind of underachieved all season," said North coach Kevin Klabunde. "It was nice to see us all come out and put it all together." The Tornado also got big performances from Chris Oetinger (78) and Adam Brown (80). Girls Golf ALL SOC — At Grants Pass, Roseburg’s Melissa Carl earned medalist honors, but North Medford ran away with the team victory. Carl shot an 82, one stroke better than Ashland’s Stephanie Johns. The Black Tornado finished with a 382, while Grants Pass took second at 412. Stephanie Graham led North with a 94.
