Ryan Van Cleave, a full-time baseball player and part-time track performer, set a meet record in the high jump and added a victory in the long jump to help the Hidden Valley boys win the fifth annual Bob Newland Track and Field Classic Friday night at South Medford High. The meet features the top freshmen and sophomore track athletes in Southern Oregon. The Mustang boys, flexing their muscles under first-year head coach Stan Goodell, racked up 114 points in besting the 13-team field. On the girls’ side of the coed meet, Amanda Potts set a meet record of 10 feet, 3 inches in the pole vault and finished second in the 300-meter hurdles to help Grants Pass triumph with 104 points. Advertisement Van Cleave has only been able to make four track workouts this spring because of his commitment to baseball, where he’s a pitcher and outfielder for the Hidden Valley varsity. But the 6-foot-2, 170-pound sophomore showcased his athleticism Friday when he sailed to lifetime bests of 19-4½ in the long jump and 6-0 in the jump. His latter effort broke the meet record of 5-10. "I’m trying to juggle both sports and I hardly have any time to practice track," said Van Cleave, who was set to rejoin his baseball teammates for a doubleheader against Illinois Valley today. "I’ve always thought baseball was my better sport, but now I’m starting to wonder. "I had a great time out here today." Van Cleave also ran on Hidden Valley’s 4x100 relay team that finished third and he placed eighth in the 200. "I don’t think he really has a clue how good he can be," said Goodell of Van Cleave. "A week ago the best he’d gone in the high jump was 5-4 and today he goes 6 feet. He’s got some speed and he’s got some spring in his legs." Jordan Hayter won both hurdle events for the Mustangs, claiming the 110 highs in 16.54 seconds and the 300 intermediates in 43.21. Hidden Valley’s other victories came from Sam Dollarhide, who established a meet record of 152-4 in the javelin, and from Jeramiah Richardson, who clocked a lifetime best of 2:03.7 in the 800 to edge Matt Johnson of Grants Pass by 3/100ths of a second. The Mustang boys, who were dead last at the Skyline Conference district meet last season, have improved by leaps and bounds under Goodell. Friday marked their fifth big-meet win in as many attempts. "We came here to get some good competition against the bigger schools and really weren’t looking to win the meet," Goodell said. "We had no idea our guys would compete like this. They really had a good night." Crater’s Charles Fell set a meet record in the boys 200 with a time of 22.5. The Grants Pass girls, meanwhile, beat host South Medford by 14 points for the title. In addition to Potts, GP picked up victories from Amanda Straw in the high jump (5-0) and from its 4x100 relay squad that blazed to a meet record time of 50.5. Freshman Chelsie O’Neill fueled South Medford as she won the 100 (13.19), the 200 (27.28) and the long jump (15-5½ ), an event she hadn’t competed in since last year. "My times in the sprints weren’t that great but I was running into a stiff headwind both times," O’Neill said. Jan Frodsham was a double winner for the Panthers as she edged out teammate Katrina Stevens to win the 100 hurdles (17.02) and the 300 hurdles (48.74). Rogue River’s Danielle Holmes set a meet record of 34-11 in the shot put.
