Cathy Schnugg, whose home just outside Medford lies in the Eagle Point school district, asked the board Wednesday to consider redrawing lines to shift her Sunridge Estates neighborhood into the Medford district. Medford’s board said last week it would be willing to absorb the property. Eagle Point doesn’t want to just hand it over, though. "It wouldn’t be prudent to give away $6.5 million worth of property," Eagle Point board Chairman Doug McKinley said. "It wouldn’t be fair to our taxpayers." The Eagle Point district has a total assessed value of about $1.3 billion, and a decrease in that value can affect how much bond payments cost property owners. The board asked Superintendent Bill Feusahrens to work out a possible trade with neighboring districts. The line between Central Point and Medford districts along Beall Lane cuts right through some homes and a boundary change could shift some of that property from Medford to Central Point. In turn, Central Point could reassign some property on its boundary with Eagle Point to that district. Thus, all districts could potentially maintain their assessed values. The Eagle Point board didn’t set a timeline for the discussions or eventual changes, McKinley said.
