The historic downtown hotel hosts its first Oregon Chocolate Festival Friday and Saturday. Recent years have brought specialty chocolatiers to Southern Oregon and this event is designed to showcase their work. Festival participants include small artisan chocolatiers as well as the better-known: Cary’s of Oregon, Dagoba, Endangered Species, Theobroma, Lillie Belle Farms and Harry and David. Festival attendees can sample an array of exotic chocolate bars, crunchy chocolate-covered toffees and rich chocolate enrobed Oregon hazelnuts, berries and pears along with Rogue Ales’ chocolate stout and chocolate-flavored cheeses from Rogue Creamery. Seminars also will be presented on the nutrition and the making of chocolate, as well as the story behind one of chocolate’s best friends: coffee. A grand prize drawing for an evening’s stay at the hotel will cap the event on Saturday. The event is scheduled to run from 2 to 6 p.m. Friday, resuming Saturday from 9 a.m. to noon and 2 p.m. to 6 p.m. Admission to the festival is $15 for the general public, or $99 for a package that includes overnight accommodations for two, a light breakfast, hotel parking and one ticket to the festival. Additional tickets for packages run $10 each. More information is available by calling the hotel at 488-1700.
