As long as you’re at it, where did Josephine County get its name? — Kathy H., Medford Jackson County was named for President Andrew Jackson, Kathy. It got the name when it was created in 1852 after gold lured people to the area. The county included most of what is now Josephine County — not the other way around — and Curry County as well. Josephine County was named for Josephine Rollins, whose father discovered gold in a tributary of the Illinois River near Kerby. The creek was also named Josephine. As long as we’re at it, Curry County was named for George Law Curry, a popular newspaperman and territorial governor of Oregon. Lewis McArthur says in "Oregon Geographic Names" that there was a move to name the county Tichenor for a Coos County political leader. Tichenor declined, saying his constituents wanted the place named after Curry. Can you picture a politician doing that today? Send questions to "Since You Asked," Mail Tribune Newsroom, P.O.
