It is interesting to contrast the BLM response to past peaceful protests held by the left-of-center. They were met with riot police and automatic weapons. Why did the BLM shut the office down for the Oath Keeper protest? Derek Volkart Talent What a relief What a relief to know that our legislators are hard at work in Salem, doing everything they can for the hardworking taxpayers. Medford's unemployment rate is 8.9 percent and the state average is 5.8 percent. Almost 62 percent of students in Oregon are on free or reduced-price lunches. We also have the distinction of leading the nation in food stamp participation (19.8 percent). In spite of these huge problems in Oregon, Sen. Chris Edwards (Democrat from Eugene) has chosen to propose legislation creating uniform decibel levels for hand dryers in public restrooms. Apparently Senator Edwards' autistic son cries and covers his ears when he is around hand dryers in public restrooms. Edwards is aware that this is not the most consequential of issues, but "finds these hand dryers to be extraordinarily obnoxious and disruptive to family members." Couldn't he have the foresight to carry some paper towels in his pockets and immediately leave the restroom after washing his hands? While it must be distressing to watch a family member experience this discomfort, it hardly seems to be a productive use of his time and the taxpayers' money. Why penalize 4 million people with an unfunded mandate? Christy Vanderlip Medford Thanks for food Our thanks to the wonderful Food Project donors who filled their green bags on Saturday, April 11, and made "Pickup Day" a huge success. The seven Food Projects in Jackson County collected over 60,000 pounds of food for hungry neighbors — equivalent to more than 48,000 meals! This included 5,500 pounds by the Eagle Point Food Project, 2,950 by the Phoenix Food Project, 3,200 by the Talent Food Project, 21,000 by the Ashland Food Project and 27,400 by the Medford Food Project (which includes Central Point and Jacksonville). The food went to 17 local food pantries. We’re especially grateful to neighborhood coordinators who picked up and delivered green bags in their town, and to local sponsors, including Town & Country Chevrolet and the Ashland Food Co-op. Sandy Abell Medford Russians to the rescue How interesting that it has been left up to the evil Russians to rescue hundreds of American citizens trapped in Yemen on their ships and airplanes. How unfortunate that Obama the Nobel Peace Prize winner was not able to rescue them. Maybe the Nobel Peace Prize should have been given to someone else? I have not heard Sean Hannity or Bill O'Reilly or the rest of the American mainstream media talk about this very much. It must be an oversight.
