Strate sparks Crater to playoff victory GRESHAM -- Kenny Strate provided Crater the production a team hopes to receive from its leadoff hitter in a Class 4A second-round state baseball playoff game Tuesday. The junior outfielder scored three runs to back up a strong pitching performance by Casey Campbell in the Comets' 10-2 victory over Centennial. Fifth-ranked Crater (23-3) advances to play Pendleton in the round of 16 on Friday. Pendleton rallied for seven runs in the seventh inning to defeat Westview 7-6 on Tuesday. Campbell struck out eight and walked two for Crater. Both Centennial runs came on a two-run homer by opposing pitcher Jared Coleman in the fifth inning to cut the Comets' lead to 5-2. "Casey gave us a big lift and we played solid defensively," Crater coach Chuck Dominiak said. "He was real sharp. It was his best performance in at least three weeks." Crater had an opportunity for a big rally in the first inning, but only came away with one run. The Comets loaded the bases with no outs on three straight walks by Coleman. Strate scored the lone run on a fielder's choice by K.J. Chubb. "We should have scored more," Dominiak said. "It would have been nice to get some breathing room right away." In the third, Crater increased its lead to 3-0. Strate walked for the second time and stole second and third. After P.J. Pardee walked to put runners on first and third, Strate scored on a ground out by Chubb. Campbell followed with an RBI single. The Comets scored two more in the fourth when Strate reached on a fielder's choice and scored on Pardee's triple. Brent Foster got Pardee home with a single. Crater finally gave Dominiak the breathing room he wanted early with a four-run outburst in seventh. Jared Maddox provided the big hit with a two-run double.
