Mason carries Mustangs to win MURPHY Nick Mason has run Hidden Valley back into the state football playoff picture. The senior running back posted his second straight 200-yard rushing performance and his third in the past four games as the Mustangs defeated Mazama 21-13 in a Skyline Conference game Friday. Mason rushed 43 times for a season-high 247 yards. The Mustangs season comes down to next Fridays game against Illinois Valley at Cave Junction. If Hidden Valley (5-3, 4-2 Skyline) wins, it advances to the state playoffs as the conferences No. 2 team. A Hidden Valley loss keeps the Mustangs out of the postseason and puts Illinois Valley in as the leagues No. 3 team. Hidden Valley drove 59 yards for a touchdown on its first possession of the game. Mason scored from 3 yards out on the seventh play of the drive with 7:55 left in the opening period. Mazama answered when quarterback Brendan Quirke connected with Eric Brosterhous for a 25-yard scoring pass. The Vikings then went ahead 13-7 when Robert Draper picked up a blocked punt on the 2 and scored with 2:30 remaining in the opening period. The Mustangs marched 60 yards on 11 plays with Mason scoring from the 2 with 3:08 left in the half. Mason capped another 11-play drive with a 4-yard TD burst with 11:21 left in the game. Mazama was limited to 76 yards on the ground and 112 through the air.
