The examination will include two televised events featuring Southern Oregon lawmakers, journalists and political and economic analysts. Reactions from viewers and readers will also be aired and published. The first show, filmed at the state Capitol, will feature a panel discussion among local legislators. It will air at 8 p.m. Thursday and be rebroadcast at 10 p.m. Friday and 3 p.m. March 30. Panelists for the first show will include Republican state Sens. Jason Atkinson and Lenn Hannon, Republican state Reps. Rob Patridge, Dennis Richardson and George Gilman and Democratic Rep. Alan Bates. The panel will be moderated by Naseem Rakha, who has covered Oregon politics since 1995 for the Consortium of Public Radio and National Public Radio. She also is the host of the political talk show, Oregon Matters. Rakha says the show will give Oregon residents a better sense of how legislators are trying to deal with the budget crisis. "As the state faces the biggest fiscal problem in its history," Rakha said, "it’s important citizens hear directly from the people that are determining how the state will cope with questions of budget cuts and tax reform." Topics on the hour-long show will include possible budget cuts, possible new revenue sources, school funding, rainy-day funds and the state kicker law, which returns money to taxpayers in years of excess revenue. The show’s viewers will be able to respond to the discussion by sending their comments to the Mail Tribune, the Klamath Falls Herald & News or SOPTV’s at www.soptv.org on the Web. A "ballot" of options discussed will also be made available in the newspapers and on Web sites. Those comments and the discussion between legislators will set the stage for the second program. It will include panel members Bob Hunter, editor of the Mail Tribune; Tim Fought, editor of the Herald & News; Matt Evans, executive director of Oregon Tax Research; and John Mitchell, an economist with U.S. Bank. The second show will air at 8 p.m., April 3; and be rebroadcast at 10 p.m., April 4; and 3 p.m., April 6. The programs will be produced and directed by Greg Frederick, director of production for SOPTV.
