Prep boys basketball `Cool Hand' Lucas lifts Eagle Point in OT, 74-72 REDMOND -- John Lucas picked a fine time to show how cool he is under pressure. When Eagle Point needed a spark Saturday against Redmond, the senior provided it in guiding Eagle Point to a 74-72 overtime victory. Lucas sank two free throws with two seconds to play in the fourth quarter to send the game into overtime, then hit the game-winner at the buzzer in the extra session to lift the Eagles (2-0). With the scored tied at 72 with 16 seconds remaining in overtime, Lucas made the most of a broken play by driving to the basket and knocking down a shot just prior to the final buzzer. Lucas finished the non-conference battle with a game-high 25 points, including three 3-pointers, while senior Phil Garrett added 18 points and nine rebounds. "I was real pleased with the way everybody played tonight," Eagle Point coach Keith Williams said. "It was just a good, solid team effort. Obviously John stepped up big for us, but everyone contributed." The Eagles jumped to an early 10-point lead in the first half, only to have Redmond take advantage of Eagle Point foul troubles and trim the deficit to 37-36 at halftime. Each half took more than an hour to play, with Mountain View using a 19-6 run to take a 34-22 halftime advantage. North (2-0) roared back in the second half, outscoring Mountain View 38-12 in the final two quarters to gain the non-conference victory. Jeff Zimmer paced North with a game-high 18 points, while Wes Towne chipped in 11.
