McArthur shines in Tornado sweep Evan McArthur�s baseball season got off to a successful start Monday. The North Medford junior shortstop provided a potent bat and solid fielding as the Black Tornado dealt visiting Marshfield a doubleheader loss in a pair of five-inning games ended by the 10-run rule. North blasted the Pirates 13-0 and 13-5 in the twin bill at the high school. In each game, McArthur collected two hits, scored two runs and had two RBIs. All four of his hits went for extra bases � three doubles and a triple. McArthur also demonstrated good range on the infield and handled 12 chances with only one error. In the opener, North junior Brent Kircher, a 10-game winner last year, pitched a six-hit shutout, with four strikeouts and one walk. Brian Weeks provided two hits and two RBIs for the Tornado, while Phil Ouellette smacked a three-run homer in the second inning. In the second game, Marshfield opened with three runs in the first off starter Mike Ryder, but the junior settled down and threw three scoreless innings. Sophomore Dustin Butler�s two-out, two-run double helped North tie the game in the bottom of the first. With two outs in the second inning, the Black Tornado strung together nine straight base hits. McArthur highlighted the outburst with a two-run triple. In the nightcap, Brett Timmerman, Devin Zupan, Robbie Folsom and Butler also collected two hits each. SOUTH MEDFORD 9, GRANTS PASS 4 � Blake St. Onge contributed two hits and four RBIs for South Medford in a season-opening non-conference victory at Miles Field. The Panthers (1-0) scored three in the first to tie it on a two-run single from St. Onge and an RBI single by Matt Smith. Back-to-back doubles by David Henneman and St. Onge provided four more runs for South in the second. Panther junior leadoff hitter Gerad Stebbins drew three walks and scored three runs. Softball CHURCHILL 1-1, NORTH MEDFORD 0-5 � North Medford bunched together seven of its eight hits in two innings of the nightcap to gain a season-opening doubleheader split at Fagone Field. In the second game, North Medford erased a 1-0 first-inning Churchill lead by scoring three runs in the second and two more in the third. The Black Tornado opened the second with singles by Britney Hillyer and Haley Barley. Amy Allen followed with an RBI single, but Barley was thrown out at the plate on the play. Allen scored after a Brandi Paxton sacrifice bunt and Darcy Cordell�s RBI single. Beth Morrill then provided an RBI double. Sophomore Keri Savano pitched a four-hitter to record her first victory. In the opener, Steph Coe allowed an unearned run in the first inning on a single that turned into a three-base error. The senior pitcher didn�t allow another hit and struck out seven with no walks. ROGUE RIVER 1, ASHLAND 0 � At Ashland, Kelly Simmons� seventh-inning RBI single broke a scoreless tie, scoring Allison Bailey, at the North Mountain Park field. Rogue River�s Katie Glasscock and Ashland�s Megan Beugli were locked up in a pitcher�s duel through six scoreless innings. Glasscock recorded nine strikeouts and two walks, while Beugli struck out four and had no walks. PHOENIX 4, EAGLE POINT 2, 8 innings � At Eagle Point, after Eagle Point tied the game with two runs in the bottom of the seventh, Phoenix pushed across two runs in the eighth inning of the non-conference game. Under the tiebreaker rule, Phoenix began the eighth with Shannon Reed at second base. She advanced to third on a wild pitch and Kelsey Russell walked. Reed scored when Russell stole second. April Darby followed with a single but Russell was thrown out at the plate and Darby went to second. Darby went to third on a fielder�s choice, then scored on a wild pitch. The Eagles used KC Grieve�s single and Tera Re�s double to tie the game with two runs in the seventh. Grieve scored on Re�s double. Re came around with the tying run by stretching the hit into a triple and scoring on an overthrow at third. Sutton Jackson had two doubles for Phoenix.
