U.S. Attorney General Loretta Lynch says that additional charges will be filed “very soon” against those involved in the 41-day standoff in Harney County. She said this just 21 days after the standoff ended on Feb. 11, about two months after it began. That’s pretty swift justice for two dozen ordinary citizens! So why haven’t we heard anything from her about the investigation of Hillary Clinton for improperly handling official communications, including 2,100 classified documents? Clinton’s private server was set up in 2008 when she ran for president, but shortly after that Obama’s so-called “transparent” government began. A year ago all of this came to light but not even a peep from Lynch. With a lot more than a wildlife refuge at risk, one would think that the AG would move swiftly to turn up the heat on the Clinton investigation. Since she has not done so, might it be an unwillingness to ruffle Clinton’s run for her party’s nomination as their presidential candidate? Will Lynch be pursuing charges “very soon” after the elections this fall, if at all? It seems that under Loretta Lynch, justice is only blind in one eye. Oscar Zuniga Medford Science's challenge The beauty and complexity of the universe has induced people of many cultures to attribute its creation to an anthropomorphic super-being with magical powers. Understandably, for centuries humans observed the world on a macroscopic level by the naked eye. But the invention of the microscope around 1600 enabled scientists and scholars to study life on the infinitesimally small level. Perfected versions of the apparatus, including the electron and atomic-force microscopes, have allowed scientists to manipulate materials on an atomic or a molecular scale. We tend to forget that humans, other animals and most matter on Earth contain elements created in stellar explosions billions of years ago. The true wonder of our unfolding universe far surpasses any emotion-stirring fiction we ascribe to it. It is long past time to jettison medieval after-life myths — scare tactics to control the masses. Extension of human life will come not through some magical transformation beyond the grave but through technological advancements such as genetic engineering, stem-cell therapy, physical enhancements, or more futuristically, downloading of human consciousness into a life-like avatar that doesn’t age. Modern science’s greater control over human evolution challenges us all to stay forward-looking and judicious. Marie Arvette Medford Vote for Bernie This election gives us a chance to fix some of the worst aspects of our politics and government, while investing wisely in our country’s future. Most people agree that money dominates national politics, and laws are unfairly influenced as a result. We’re falling behind in education, selling out our kids’ future, and our infrastructure is falling apart. But we can change this. Expose and limit political spending — so you can make an informed choice, and legislators stop spending half their time fundraising. Rebuild roads, fund schools and stop government profits from student loans so people can buy homes — these are sensible and profitable investments. I believe we can set this right. That’s why I’m voting Bernie Sanders. He has outstanding integrity and 35 years of experience. His tax plans make economic sense, and he’s on our side. For equality, transparency, and smart investments, for our future, Bernie Sanders.
