PREP FB: Challengers cruise past Sutherlin for FWL win By Mail Tribune staff Updated: Sep 09, 2022 11:36 PM A A Ashton Moody was nearly perfect behind center Friday night for the Cascade Christian football team, which scored 51 first-half points on its way to a 54-6 triumph over Sutherlin at Lithia & Driveway Fields. The junior quarterback threw three touchdowns and ran for another while completing 13 of 16 passes for 220 yards. His first TD was a 24-yard, pin-point toss down the right hash over the shoulder of senior receiver Tyler Almasy on the Challengers’ opening drive. Moody struck again with a 9-yard TD run and was involved in his third score of the quarter with a 19-yard pass to senior Brody Sample. Moody completed his night with a 7-yard TD toss to junior receiver Luke Wilson with 13 seconds remaining in the first half. In addition to limiting Sutherlin (0-2, 0-2 FWL) to a lone first-quarter touchdown run by Sutherlin quarterback Ely Palm, the Challengers defense made its mark with back-to-back interception returns in the second quarter. The first was by Triston Wallace 17 seconds into the quarter and five minutes later, Cole Shields picked off Palm to bolster Cascade Christian’s advantage to 44-6. The Challengers (2-0, 2-0) also had two fumble recoveries while allowing just 185 yards of total offense. Junior receiver Peyton Maurer paced the Challengers with 71 yards on four catches and Sample also hauled in four Moody passes for 66 yards. Sample also led the Challengers on the ground with 27 yards on two attempts. Wallace added a TD run but rushed just two times for 16 yards on a night where the Challengers only ran the ball 12 times. Ashland (1-1) — which elected to play a JV-only schedule during the abbreviated spring 2021 season and then went 0-8 last fall — got three touchdown passes from sophomore quarterback Jojo Harrower, including the second of two to junior tight end Marcelo Saturen to make it a two-possession game late in the fourth quarter. Ashland running back Gavin White — who converted the two-point conversion after Saturen’s second TD catch — scored two touchdowns on the ground and another receiving for the 4A Grizzlies, who lost their season opener 54-33 last Friday to another former Midwestern League foe in Eagle Point. North Eugene (1-1) held a 26-21 halftime lead. ST. MARY’S 35, NORTH VALLEY 14: At Sutherlin, St. Mary’s junior Indiana Olson carried the ball 22 times for 218 yards and four touchdowns to push the Crusaders to 2-0 overall and in Far West League play in a game moved north to Sutherlin High School. North Valley (1-1, 1-1 FWL) dominated time of possession early and saw Leo Freedman score on a 2-yard run to take a 6-0 lead. It was all St. Mary’s after that, with Olson scoring on TD runs of 14, 2 and 5 yards before teammate TJ Flowers got in the act with his own 3-yard TD run. Following a John Erkeneff 5-yard TD for the Knights, Olson capped his day with an 8-yard TD run. Flowers finished with 67 yards on five carries, while quarterback Tyson Delplanche was 4-of-7 for 51 yards and an interception. All of Deplanche’s completions went to Jaden Foster. The game was moved to Sutherlin out of concern for smoke from wildfires moving into the Merlin area around the original 7 p.m. kickoff time. The Pirates (0-2, 0-2 FWL) marched 82 yards down the field but turned the ball over on downs. On the Red Devils’ ensuing drive, the Pirates earned a stop with by recovering a fumble but thereafter, Coquille’s run game was too stout with Waylon Messerle, who scored four rushing touchdowns. Phoenix senior receiver Jackson Selden had six catches for 115 yards and freshman running back Cody Martin added seven carries for 70 yards. Coquille improved to 2-0 both overall and in FWL play.
