Mail Tribune / Andrew Mariman Records fall at Rotary Neuenschwander blazes to state’s best time in the 300-intermediate hurdles By DON HUNT Mail Tribune GRANTS PASS — When you hold a track meet for 53 years and attract many of the state’s premier athletes to compete in it, you can imagine what the record book looks like. The times and marks in many of the events are good enough to win state titles. But records are meant to be broken, and two of them were eclipsed within a span of 10 minutes at the Grants Pass Rotary Invitational Saturday at sun-baked Russ Werner Field. First, South Medford’s Ryan Neuenschwander edged North Valley’s Jeremiah Lewman in a classic boys 300-meter intermediate hurdles race. Advertisement Neuenschwander set a meet record of 38.64 seconds while Lewman was clocked in 38.65. The times are the fastest in the state this season and were well under the old meet record of 39.17 set by North Medford’s Chris Vorgang in 2002. A few minutes later, Eagle Point’s Robbie Johnston catapulted himself over the pole vault bar at 16 feet, matching his personal best and eclipsing the old meet mark of 15-7 set by Bend’s Joel Lelacheur in 2001. Johnston then narrowly missed at 16-4¾ . Earlier in the day, South Eugene’s Sarah Pearson held off Coquille’s Holly Dieu and North Medford’s Danielle Jordan to claim a fiercely-fought 1,500 in a meet-record time of 4:38.40. Dieu was second in 4:40.5 and Jordan third in a school-record 4:46.2. The old meet record of 4:39.85 was set by Glendale’s Iris Cripps in 1994. Also, Marshfield’s Leah Worthen blazed to a meet-record time of 25.3 in the girls 200, eclipsing the old mark of 25.38 set by Beaverton’s Rachel Morris in 1997 and tied by South Medford’s Amois Gonzalez in 1998. For the red-hot Neuenschwander, Saturday marked the fourth straight meet in which he has registered a school record and lifetime best clocking in the 300 hurdles. Lewman, the defending Class 3A state champion and state meet record holder, has run in three of the races. "I’ve got to give him (Lewman) a lot of credit — he pushes me every stinking time," said Neuenschwander, who beat Lewman at the Crater Classic on April 17 but lost to him at the Yreka Invitational one week later. "I knew I’d have to run in the mid-38s today to beat him." The 6-foot-2 Neuenschwander used his strength, power and near-flawless form to build an early lead over the 5-6 Lewman, who closed hard over the final 80 meters but lost by 1/100th of a second. "I got out strong and kept my 15-step pattern until the last hurdle," Neuenschwander said. "He (Lewman) has more raw speed than me, so it’s important to start fast and charge through the corner. "But I could hear his footsteps as we got near the finish line. He’s not easy to beat." Said Lewman: "I was playing catch-up the entire race and never quite caught the guy. But it’s a friendly competition. Neuenschwander’s a great guy, and it’s fun just lining up and seeing who has it on that particular day." Johnston, meanwhile, beat a loaded pole vault field that included Hidden Valley’s Ryan Musselman, South Eugene’s Darryl Evans and Roseburg’s Austin Shoptaw. The Eagle Point standout didn’t enter the competition until the bar was elevated to 15 feet — six inches higher than where he normally starts. The strategy worked as Johnston made 15-0 and 15-6 on his first attempts, but he needed three vaults to tie his state-best mark of 16-0. Johnston then raised the bar to five meters, or 16-4¾ , to match the best high school mark made by his event coach, Ben Brainard. Johnston had two good attempts at that height. Had he made it, he would have become the fourth-best vaulter in state history. "I was over the bar twice but hit it on the way down," Johnston said. "Once you get over 16 feet, the margin for error becomes very small. "But I got the meet record, and that was my main goal today." Almost lost in the excitement of the meet records was the jockeying for team supremacy. The North Medford girls, buoyed by victories from Jordan in the 3,000 (10:23.29), Jenna Siebenlist in the 100 hurdles (15.76), Rachel Munyon in the discus (125-3) and from its 4x100 relay team (50.2), racked up 89 points. Runner-up Marshfield scored 62. The boys team race was much tighter. Crater edged South Medford for the team title, 55 points to 52, even though the Comets’ standout hurdler, Jason James, missed the meet because of illness. The Panther boys could have won with a top-four finish in the day’s final event — the 4x400 relay. They appeared to be on their way to a such a showing only to watch Seth Hernandez lose the baton after colliding with another runner. The mishap came as Hernandez was completing the second leg and it cost the Panthers several seconds. South Medford wound up a non-scoring seventh in the event while the Comets took second, which was worth eight points and put them over the hump. "It was incidental contact that you periodically see in relay events," South Medford coach Bill Rowan said. "I know Seth feels bad but it wasn’t his fault. Someone slammed into his hand and the baton fell out. There was nothing he could do except go and pick it up." The meet, which was conducted on a hot (the high in Grants Pass Saturday was 85 degrees) and near windless day, featured several other outstanding performers. Among them: Phoenix High’s Kyle Gillette, who bested a good field in the boys’ 1,500 to triumph in 3:59.0. Gillette’s time shattered his lifetime best by 13 seconds and Nathan May’s one-year-old school record by five seconds. Gillette used a killer kick over the final 300 meters to surpass Brookings’ Scott Sanders, Roseburg’s Gavin Weaver, Ashland’s David Morgan and Aaron Megazzi of Ferndale, Calif. "Maybe it was the Frosted Flakes I ate for breakfast," Gillette said. "That’s what I eat before every race." Gillette trailed by as much as 15 meters halfway into the race but pulled within seven meters with a lap to go and kept charging ahead. "Once I caught those first two guys (Morgan and Megazzi) with about 200 meters to go, I knew I could pick off the other two," Gillette said. "But I had no idea I could run this fast today. I was just trying to break 4:10." Rogue River’s Shannon Jentzsch, who cleared 11-6 to win the girls pole vault and then nearly got over the bar at 12 feet, which would have been a meet record. South Medford’s Alan Phillips, who threw the javelin a school-record 183-5. Phillips spent Saturday morning taking his SAT test at nearby Grants Pass High, then hustled his way to the track and achieved a lifetime best by nearly 6 feet.
