New park christened Blue Heron PHOENIX � The City Council has taken the first step in developing a new park: It picked a name. Blue Heron Community Park will be the name of a 25-acre piece of undeveloped parkland between Highway 99 and I-5 just south of Bear Lake Mobile Estates. Blue herons nest in the wetland areas of the park. Other names proposed to the council by the Parks Commission were Blackberry Community Park, Phoenix Community Park and Pioneer Family Park. About 12 names of persons were submitted to the commission, said chairman Darrell Paxson. "There�s no disrespect to the people," said Paxson. "The problem is, 20 years from now the population of the community won�t know who they were." Opportunities for memorials, such as planting trees, will exist in the park, said City Planner Denis Murray. Paxson said the Blue Heron name came from Councilwoman Diana Rasmussen, who serves as liaison between the commission and the council. The site is located at the south end of downtown Phoenix. Bear Creek runs through the park. Access is from Bear Creek Drive (Highway 99) near Oak Street. The city is seeking grants to develop the park�s first phase, which will include access roads, parking, drainage and landscaping.
