Mustangs capture twin bill COOS BAY � The Medford Mustangs kept their hopes alive for an American Legion AAA state playoff berth with an Area 4 doubleheader victory over the Bay Area Rams Friday at Southwestern Oregon Community College. Tony Conklin registered saves in both ends of the twin bill as the Mustangs defeated Bay Area, 6-5 and 10-6. Medford currently stands in fifth place in Area 4 with a 12-10 record. The second through fourth teams advance into the state playoffs. The Mustangs complete the season with a home doubleheader at 6 p.m. Sunday at Miles Field against league-leading Roseburg, which hosts the state tournament and receives an automatic tournament bid. Bay Area had the tying run on third base with no outs in the seventh when Conklin relieved starter Brent Kircher and retired the next three batters. Colby Gonzales� two-out, two-run home run, his second of the season, broke a 4-all tie in the fourth inning. Gonzales and Charlie Jensen each collected two hits for the Mustangs. In Game 2, Conklin pitched two scoreless innings for the save. Medford starter Josh Bottjer picked up his third victory in eight decisions, allowing three earned runs in five innings. Phil Ouellette went 3-for-5 to lead the Mustangs� 14-hit attack while Andy Bartels and Chuck Shine added two apiece. Girls Basketball SAN DIEGO CLASSIC � At San Diego, Calif., Crater High won two games Friday to finish first in its eight-team pool with a 3-0 record and advance into the 16-team championship bracket of the 218-school tournament at UC-San Diego. Crater defeated Utah Class 4A state champion Timpanegos of Orem 42-33 in its first game after running off 14 unanswered points to take command. Sarah Pool led Crater with 13 points, six assists and three steals. Amy Denson added 11 points, six rebounds and five steals and Jody McLeod grabbed six rebounds and had five steals. In the second game, Crater turned a 10-4 deficit into a 18-13 lead against J.W. North of Riverside, Calif., to end the first half en route to a 38-30 win. Crater�s Janell Sapienza had eight points, seven assists, three steals and one block. McLeod and Denson led in scoring with 10 points apiece. McLeod also hauled down eight rebounds, including seven offensive. SELECT TEAM FINISHES THIRD � At San Francisco, Southern Oregon Select defeated the Valley Cougars from Los Angeles, 58-34, Thursday to claim third place in the Battle of the Bay girls basketball tournament at the University of San Francisco. Southern Oregon Select finished 3-1 in bracket play after losing two seeding games. Heather Fossen of South Medford paced Select with 13 points, Sam Gilbert of Klamath Union added 11 and Stefani Talbott of Ashland chipped in eight. Boys Basketball OREGON ICE 59, SPOKANE, WASH. 32 � At Long Beach, Calif., Eric Fiegi and Ryan Heil of South Medford High scored 14 and six points, respectively, to lead the Oregon Ice to its second pool victory without a loss in the 36-team Long Beach Slam and Jam NIT basketball tournament Friday. Oregon Ice is a select team with players representing seven high schools throughout the state. Fiegi also had seven rebounds and two blocks, while Heil contributed four rebounds. Softball BLACK TORNADO 6, SNOHOMISH, WASH. 5 � At Tacoma, Wash., the North Medford Black Tornado ASA 14-under softball team scored twice in the bottom of the seventh to down Snohomish, Wash., in the opening game of the Northwest Regional Tournament at Sera Park. After Snohomish took a 5-4 lead in the fifth, North answered when Stephanie Haskett reached on a error and Darcy Cordell tripled to right-center field to knot the score. Two outs later, Staci Glass singled to left, sending home Cordell with the winning run. Glass and Tyler Sutherlund collected three hits each, while Cordell and Brittani Miller added two apiece. Little League MEDFORD 11, ASHLAND 1 � At LaPine, Tyler Heil hit a two-run home run to lead the Medford American boys 11-12-year-old baseball all-star team to their fifth District 6 championship. Ryan Folsom, Kyle Singler, Neil Smith and James Horsely all added two RBIs in the four-inning win, called because of the 10-run mercy rule. CORVALLIS 9, MEDFORD AMERICANS 2 � At Portland, Melisa Scott allowed one hit and struck out 15 for Corvallis in the opening game of the girls state 11-12-year-old double-elimination tournament at Lents Field. Medford scored its first run in the fifth inning when Britni Susi walked stole second and came home on two passed balls. Jessica Sandoval drove in Medford�s final run with a sixth inning RBI single.
