North Valley began its final drive trailing by four points with 2:28 remaining in the game. The Knights drove from their 29 to the Sherwood 5-yard line but, on third-and-goal, quarterback Josh Makepeace’s pass to Greg Richardson in the flat was picked off by Moylett with 47 seconds to go and the Bowmen ran out the clock. "It was a game we very easily could have won," North Valley coach Todd Willaman said. "It was pretty heartbreaking. We had our opportunity. It just didn’t happen for us tonight." When the Knights (5-5) took a 12-0 lead at halftime, another quarterfinal appearance seemed possible. A fumble recovery on the Sherwood 5 by junior Brennan Olander after Tim Stickler sacked quarterback Calvin Davis set up the game’s initial touchdown. North Valley scored one play later on a 5-yard pass from Makepeace to Anthony Spain with 10:44 left in the second period. Advertisement Richardson then added a 73-yard touchdown run with 1:06 left before halftime to give North Valley a 12-0 lead. "We just ran a blast play," Willaman said of the TD run. "It closed up on him and he popped it outside and he was gone." The North Valley defense stemmed the Bowmen’s momentum in the first half with several fourth-down stops and the fumble recovery that set up the Knights’ first touchdown. After a 39-yard kickoff return by John Bellanger to open up the second half, Sherwood capped a 46-yard, seven-play drive on a Davis 6-yard TD pass to Joey Thiessen. Sherwood closed the gap to 12-9 on a safety when the ball was snapped out of the end zone on an attempted punt. Following the safety, the Bowmen put together the game-winning scoring drive, going 47 yards in 11 plays. Keith Boulton carried the final 4 yards to give Sherwood a 16-12 lead with 7:49 remaining in the game. North Valley finished with 130 yards rushing and 41 more through the air. Richardson rushed for 113 yards on 13 carries. Sherwood totaled 248 yards in offense, with 222 coming on the ground. Boulton carried 29 times for 155 yards. "Our defense kept us in the game," said Willaman. "We really brought it. We made some big hits." Sherwood (10-1), the Tri Valley League’s No. 2 representative, will host Junction City in a quarterfinal round game next week. The Indians pulled within a touchdown in the fourth quarter and got the ball back. But with 1:32 to play and the ball on the Jesuit 32-yard line, Roseburg fumbled to end all hopes. Jesuit’s Jon Breuer passed for a touchdown and ran for another. Heath Faulk’s 6-yard run pushed the Crusader lead to 24-10 in the third quarter, but senior running back Aaron Buxton ran the ensuing kickoff 92 yards to paydirt. Roseburg finishes its season at 7-4 while Jesuit advances to face cross-town rival Central Catholic in the state quarterfinals.
