Benson baffles South in tourney opener Thursday Dec 21, 2017 at 2:00 AM Dec 21, 2017 at 10:40 PM PORTLAND — The 10th-ranked South Medford girls basketball team’s youth caught up to it Thursday facing third-ranked Benson on the opening day of the Portland Holiday Classic. The Panthers had a difficult time executing offensively, resulting in a 29 percent shooting performance, and the Techsters rolled to a 54-34 win at Franklin High School. “Tonight truly showed our youth,” said South Medford coach Tom Cole. “You can’t do the things we did tonight and expect to have a positive outcome.” While the Panthers (5-2) did well taking care of the ball and breaking Benson’s aggressive press, they were just 12-for-42 from the field and 0-for-8 from 3-point range. South Medford got into foul trouble in the third quarter, in which the Techsters (3-0) began to pull away by winning the period 20-8. South squares off against eighth-ranked Tigard at 1:30 p.m. today. Bella Pedrojetti paced the Panthers with 10 points, and Shakia Perry added eight points and 10 rebounds. SOUTH MEDFORD (34): K. The Red Tail Hawks (10-0, 1-0 MVL) picked up 10 points and 12 rebounds from Zoe Belovitch, and Hanna Wilhelm pitched in nine points and seven boards. Subaru Classic CRATER 73, PHOENIX 24: Senior guard Mackenzie Ryerson drained seven 3-point shots to tie the school record as Crater cruised past Phoenix in the opening round of the Southern Oregon Subaru Christmas Classic. Ryerson made 7 of 14 3s, tying the single-game record of Brittany Scott. She made four triples in the first half and converted three more in the third quarter before sitting. She also added a conventional three-point play to finish with 24 points. Junior post Maya Van Hook added 10 points for the Comets (5-0), who saw all 10 players score. Eliza Idiart (seven points, four assists, three steals), Alexus Woodard (six points, seven steals, nine rebounds) and Syd Gray (five points, four assists, six rebounds) were standouts. Mya Elder Hammond added nine points, six rebounds and four steals and Sarah Summers six rebounds and two steals for the Grizzlies (1-4), who play Cascade Christian today.
