LETTERS TO THE EDITOR Letters to the Editor, July 2 Comment MailTribune.com Writer Posted Jul. 2, 2015 at 12:01 AM Posted Jul. 2, 2015 at 12:01 AM » Social News 'Boosting'  southwest Oregon I was amused by a recent ad in the Tribune for Boost Southwest Oregon, paid for by its sponsors, "the Boosters at www.BoostSouthwestOregon.org." My thesaurus shows the following synonyms for boost: Loot, pilfer, rip off, thieve, shoplift and aggrandize, among others. This is a most apropos title for a shadow organization which is no doubt based in another state and/or country, and whose objective is to fatten its coffers at the potential harm to the citizens of our fair state, without proving any actual benefit. In the ad, a Ms. Heather Tramp is quoted as stating that her son is just getting out of high school, and she would like for him to be able to live here and have a good job (presumably helping to build the Jordan Cove and Pacific Connector Pipeline.) Ms. Tramp should instead encourage her son to attend Rogue Community College in order to perhaps qualify for a permanent job with a future, instead of one that may provide him with little in the way of future or benefits, even if, God forbid, it should come to pass (which is doubtful considering public opposition to this questionable project.) Michael Mace Medford Drop 'International' Every time i drive by the Medford airport and see the sign, "Rogue Valley International Medford Airport," I think to myself, "That's not right." We (the public) cannot fly direct internationally from Medford. I know that at one time we had a foreign trade zone at the airport, but apparently that did not work out. People from different parts of the country or the world who may look up Medford, Ore. on the Internet may be confused when they see Rogue Valley International Airport. I suggest just dropping the word "International" from the name. If in 10 or 20 or 40 years this area becomes big enough that international flights do originate from here, the word can always be added to the name. Bill Myers Medford Global destruction I’m not Roman Catholic but Pope Francis is right, capitalism is causing global warming ― global destruction, actually. Why? Capitalism rewards greed and greed is part of every person’s sin nature (see Mark 7:14-23) Religious mumbo jumbo? But, if God is a silly concept and we’re not sinners, then why are we the only species on earth that is constantly slaughtering our own kind in wholesale lots, not for food or exclusive breeding rights? Also, we’re busily destroying the earth’s flora and fauna. Our sin natures blind us to us. Economically, the USA is some combination of capitalism and socialism, much like Western Europe. But it’s the capitalism part that appeals and leads many to place profit above all else, even to denying the handwriting on the wall. Hartley Anderson Medford A memorable evening What a wonderful, wacky place the Rogue Valley is, exemplified most recently by the Willie Nelson concert. Where else would you find, besides scads of cowboy hats and Boomer tie-dyes, the current and former presidents of our university, the CEO of a major media outlet, season ticket holders for the Chamber Music Series, OSF insiders who usually can be found at highbrow theatrical events, surgeons, button-down bankers — all there to enjoy mediocre (at best) “songs” by a one-time country music great? I’m glad I went, even though Willie no longer sings, but rather mouths the words and hits perhaps one note in 20, relying on a nimble backup band to cover the chords and create a discernible beat. The audience came to hear in our minds and hearts the now-lost Willie Nelson, imagining the missing melodies, grateful for his decades of terrific music and outrageous behavior. And the bonus? Great bluegrass instrumental music and lovely singing from Alison Krauss. It was a memorable evening, made the more entertaining by the diversity of the audience. Hooray for the Rogue Valley and hooray for Britt!
