PREP ROUNDUP Phoenix sends three swimmers to state finals Comment MailTribune.com Writer Posted Feb. 20, 2016 at 2:00 AM Posted Feb. 20, 2016 at 2:00 AM » Social News GRESHAM — Phoenix High qualified three swimmers — Lauren Speaks, Emily Samudio and Ethan Shepherd — into today’s finals after Friday’s preliminary round at the Class 4A/3A/2A state swim meet at Mt. Hood Aquatic Center. The top six individuals and relay teams in the prelims advanced to the finals. Speaks, second-seeded in the 100-yard breaststroke, finished with the second-best time of 1 minute, 9.79 seconds to advance. She just missed in the 200 individual medley, placing seventh in 2:23.90. Samudio, seeded fourth, moved into the finals of the 100 butterfly with the fifth-fastest time (1:02.91) and was ninth in the 500 free (5:49.06). The Pirate girls 200 medley relay took seventh (2:04.87) with Tiona Hurd, Speaks, Samudio and Emma Amundsen. Shepherd, a senior, finished fourth in the 50 free (22.91) to advance and seventh in the 100 free (51.32). Phoenix senior Eddie Stewart was 12th in the 100 fly. Shepherd also swam legs on the Pirates’ 200 medley and 400 free relay teams, which each placed eighth. In the medley, Shepherd was joined by Bryce Roy, Thomas Ward and Stewart. Other members on the free relay were Alec Shepherd, Roy and Stewart. The St. Mary’s boys finished seventh in both the 200 medley relay and 400 free relay. The Crusaders team for both relays was Jasper Zhu, who also took 12th in the 100 backstroke, Scott Younker, Caleb Ringger and Chris Ball. Cascade Christian’s Christian Scaglione placed seventh in the 100 breast (1:04.69) and ninth in the 50 free (23.70). Wrestling 4A DISTRICT 3: At Klamath Falls, six Phoenix wrestlers advanced to the semifinals of the 12-school Class 4A District 3 tournament, leaving the Pirates in third place at Henley High. Marshfield leads with 167 points, followed by Henley (164) and Phoenix (96.5). After a first-round bye, Trace Vega pinned Henley’s Daniel Aguilar in 27 seconds in the 195-pound quarterfinals. He’ll face South Umpqua’s Josh Buehler in the semifinals today. At 170 pounds, Justin Knight landed a spot in the semifinals after a bye and forfeit. Jessi Daniels (145) pinned Siuslaw’s Ivan Ellsworth-Wayla in 1:25 in the opening round and then earned a 7-1 decision against Mazama’s Davin Nichols in the quarterfinals. Also at 145, Mark McAllister won by major decision, 10-2, over Hidden Valley’s Brooks Kimball in the first round and pinned North Bend’s Ashton Blondell in 2 minutes in the quarterfinals. Daniels and McAllister are on opposite sides of the bracket. At 138, Cedar King moved on after defeating North Valley’s Ha’aheo Ordonez by fall in 1:26 and pinning Henley’s Boot Clark in 2:25. Zach Atteberry (126) pinned Siuslaw’s Bingham Murray in 5:02 after an opening-round forfeit.
